Jaguar XJS V12 1989

General description : An exemplary XJS V12 coupe, with a mere 16k miles from new.

MODEL HISTORY

The Jaguar XJS was launched in 1975 and took an entirely different approach by the company to the previous sports cars they produced. More a luxury grand tourer, the XJS was not to be a direct replacement for the legendary E-type. Based on the Jaguar XJ12 saloon's mechanicals, with a fuel-injected engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmissions, at the time it was the most expensive model Jaguar had ever produced. The manual was soon dropped as the gearbox was left over from V12 E-Type. V12 cars were unusual at the time, with notable others coming mainly from Italian luxury sports car makers Lamborghini and Ferrari.

During the 1980s, Jaguar worked closely with Tom Walkinshaw Racing to develop the XJS into a winning racecar in the FIA World Sports Car Championship. Increased power for the V12, weight reduction, larger AP brakes were part of the recipe to take the fight to BMW along with meticulous preparation. It didn't take long for Tom Walkinshaw to get results with wins in 1982 at Brno, Austria, Nürburgring, Zolder, and most importantly on Jaguar home soil at Silverstone.

The XJS was discontinued in 1996 after 21 years in production; it was replaced by the Jaguar XK8.

Equipment

EXTERIOR

This extremely low mileage XJS is finished in Bordeaux Red metallic with a sharp two-tone pinstripe along both sides. The gleaming bodywork presents to an excellent standard throughout and is free from any unsightly scuffs or dents, with all panels lining up just as they should. There are no prominent stone chips to the front end and all the brightwork still retains a beautiful mirror finish. On closer inspection you'll notice how all the rubbers and trim pieces maintain a particularly fresh appearance.

INTERIOR

The lavish XJS interior remains in superb condition. The Doeskin leather upholstery presents impeccably throughout with almost no signs of any wear to report. The bolsters are in especially good condition, perfectly in line with the car's 16k miles from new. All surrounding leather panels are equally unmarked.

Walnut veneer adorns the doors, fascia, and centre console. The pristine trim is entirely scratch-free with no cracks or milking to the lacquer. The carpets are unmarked throughout, and the rear luggage compartment appears almost unused. The spare wheel, Jaguar toolkit, and jack are all still present and correct.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The densely packed engine bay presents in outstanding condition with zero corrosion to report. The 5.3-litre V12 remains in excellent fettle, idling up to temperature without fuss. Original factory stickers can still be found and there are almost no signs of deterioration to of any components. As to be expected the engine pulls effortlessly and the gear changes are smooth.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Jaguar sits on the original set of 15-inch cross-spoke alloys. They have just been refurbished to the highest standard and now present absolutely as new. The wheels are shod in a matching set of Falken tyres, each with ample tread remaining. The discs and pads are also in good condition with plenty of life left.

HISTORY FILE

This sublime XJS was first registered in 1989. It was supplied new by Harwoods of Pulborough and delivered to its first keeper on the 18th May. Used sparingly by the owner it was purchased by a keen Jaguar enthusiast one year later at just 4,200 miles. By the time of its first MOT the mileage had risen to just 9,234.

The car has now covered just 16,626 miles and is present with an extensive MOT history that verifies this. The history file is complete with the original green leather document pack and all associated manuals. The stamped service booklet is of course present, as is the pre-delivery inspection card. There are numerous invoices from over the years as well as a fully documented history of the car's life from new, as detailed by the previous owner.

About Jaguar XJS
The Jaguar XJS is a grand tourer produced by Jaguar from 1975 to 1996. It was designed as a replacement for the popular Jaguar E-Type, but instead of a sleek sports car, the XJS was a more luxurious and refined grand tourer.

Initially, the XJS was powered by a 5.3-liter V12 engine that produced up to 295 horsepower, giving it impressive performance for a car of its size and weight. Later versions of the XJS also offered a six-cylinder engine option, as well as a supercharged V6 engine.

The XJS featured a distinctive design that was updated over the years, with notable changes including the addition of a convertible model and the introduction of a four-seat option. It also offered a number of luxurious features, such as leather seats, wood trim, and air conditioning.

Despite its luxury focus, the XJS was also a capable performance car, with notable wins in the European Touring Car Championship and the Australian Touring Car Championship. It also served as the basis for the Jaguar XJR-15, a limited-production supercar.

Today, the Jaguar XJS is a popular classic car, with enthusiasts drawn to its distinctive design and impressive performance. Its luxurious features and refined ride also make it a popular choice among collectors looking for a comfortable and stylish grand tourer.
