Der andere große Porsche
Das hätte der Thronfolger werden sollen, der Nachfolger des ewig jungen 911, von dem man Ende der 1960er glaubte, er hätte seine beste Zeit hinter sich und keine große Zukunft mehr. Daher wurde ein radikal anderes Layout gewählt: Das neue Spitzenmodell sollte ein luxuriöser Gran Turismo (Tourenwagen) sein, mit einem kräftigen wassergekühlten V8 vorne, der 176 kW (240 PS) aus 4,5 Litern Hubraum leistete, und der Transaxle-Anordnung, die eine Gewichtsverteilung von fast 50/50 (vorn/hinten) ermöglichte. Der 928 wurde 1977 auf dem Genfer Auto-Salon vorgestellt. 1978 gewann er die begehrte Auszeichnung "Europäisches Auto des Jahres", als erster Sportwagen überhaupt - ein klares Indiz dafür, wie weit der 928 sowohl technisch als auch vom Design her seiner Zeit voraus war. Viele Porsche-Freunde schwankten dennoch zwischen Mißtrauen und grundsätzlicher Ablehnung, und der 911 verkaufte sich weiter. Nichtsdestotrotz wurde der 928 ein Erfolgsmodell und über stolze 18 Jahre hinweg produziert. Spätere Modelle waren mit einem 5,4 Liter-Motor ausgestattet, mit bis zu 257 kW (350 PS). Nur jeder fünfte aller 928 war handgeschaltet!
