You're looking at a real-deal 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396, but this icon of American muscle has been enhanced with even more big block power. So it's hard not to love an upgraded monster motor with four-on-the-floor that's all contained within a premium all-black pillarless hardtop.
The way this car looks is no joke, and the investment in time and money is obvious everywhere you look. If you're a fan of the early Chevelle bodies, with its beautiful flying buttress C-pillars and subtle aggression, then this car should ring all the right bells. The shine of the black paint takes advantage of modern clearcoat. Underneath, the metalwork is quite good, featuring good gaps all around and leading to a deep luster that only comes from a lot of hard work. In fact, the mirror-like chrome bumpers rival the paint for shine. This was the first year for the SS396 as its own separate model, and this coupe wears its unique pieces with pride, including the blacked-out grille, hood vents, ribbed lower trim panels, and even the 396 badging on the fender.
Open the door, and you're greeted to handsome package that completes the ultra desirable full black presentation inside & out. The bucket seats with center console interior perfectly captures this Chevelle's comfortable and performance dual-purpose nature. The seats, door panels, dash pad, and headliner all have a deep, black appearance – so you know there was a quality investment here during restoration. But this is far from a sea of darkness. There's bright trim on places like the dual-spoke steering wheel, long horizontal speedometer, heat/defrost sliders, and the auxiliary gauge package – even the bright clock is still ticking away! This is a great total package for vintage car lovers, but if you also haven't yet picked up on the big power cues, the column-mounted tach and 4 speed shifter should really hint at the beast behind the grille.
You'll love lifting the hood at car shows because everyone enjoys seeing an engine bay stuffed with big block power. In fact, you can just tell this one was built to show off with its extremely fresh and tidy appearance that wants to look like it's factory fresh. After all, those GM hoses, Delco-style battery topper, and correct decals & stampings all want you to believe this was born that way. But once you read the displacement on the shiny air topper and Chevrolet Performance valve covers, you'll know this is a far bigger beast than what the factory installed. This 502 cubic-inch has enough displacement to already be a street king, but then it's also been upgraded with go-fast goodies like a four-barrel carburetor, aluminum intake, GM aluminum heads, and long tube headers that feed an H-pipe dual exhaust. Best of all, you're in complete control of this monster motor and its thunderous soundtrack thanks to the four-speed manual transmission. And we can continue to mention how fresh the restoration is, but all you have to do is see the undercarriage photos to fully understand the level of investment and attention to detail. And while you're looking at the fresh components, don't forget to see the upgrades like the thick front sway bar and front disc brakes.
