Unquestionably the Ferrari 275 GTB remains among the finest and most desirable sports cars in the world. Over a period of two years, Ferrari built just 453 examples of the original 275 GTB before introducing the revised GTB/4 at the Paris Auto Salon in October 1966. But it is the aluminum long nose that has continually captured the imagination of enthusiasts and collectors for decades since its original release. Known for their phenomenal performance, the 275 GTB featured the 3,285 cc type 213 SOHC V-12 engine capable of 300bhp at 7,600rpms. The GTB was not only a performance icon of racing, it became one of the most sought after road cars during their short production run.

Ferrari historian Dyke Ridgley, whose authoritative 275 GTB production list was recently published by Cavallino magazine, states that Carrozzeria Scaglietti built only 205 examples with the desirable long-nose body style, introduced approximately halfway through 275 GTB production. The updated design was characterized by a revised front-end treatment (increasing the length and surface area for improved aerodynamics), larger rear glass, and external trunk hinges. Although the majority of these rare long nose cars were constructed in steel, 80 cars were hand formed using lightweight aluminum coachwork. Not only are these beautiful alloy-bodied 275 GTBs more rare than their steel-bodied counterparts, they represent the pinnacle of classic dual-purpose berlinettas constructed during this amazing period of Ferrari and motorsports history.

According to factory records, this alloy-bodied 275 GTB (chassis 08117) was completed in late 1965 and finished in the elegant color scheme of Grigio Argento Metallizzato (Metallic Silver Gray) over black leather interior. On January 7, 1966, the official Certificate of Origin was issued and the new Ferrari was delivered to the official dealer in Rome, Motor S.a.s. di Carla Allegretti e C.

According to Automobile Club d’Italia registration records, the first sale of 08117 was February 1966 to Angela Panichi, a resident of Rome. On January 11, 1967, the 275 GTB was sold to its second owner, Rodolfo Panizza, through Count Tommaso Antolini-Ossi. Mr. Panizza, a 33-year old soccer player, retained the car throughout 1967 before selling it in December to Anna Maria Stampa, a resident of Naples.

During Mr. Panizza’s brief ownership, the alloy-bodied 275 GTB was spotted on Kings Road in London by English automotive enthusiast and photographer John Hendy. Identified by its registration number – “Roma 90751” – and Italian country code roundel, 08117 appears in Mr. Hendy’s photographs as the ideal high-performance road car, outfitted with Campagnolo alloy wheels, a radio antenna on the driver’s side rear quarter, and a pair of accessory driving lights mounted inside the grille opening.

Like many Ferraris sold new in Italy, 08117 passed among a series of owners during its earliest years before being exported to the US. In 1972, Jack Kasarjian of Winchester, Massachusetts, acquired the 275 GTB, presumably through his contacts at FAF Motorcars, one of the largest Ferrari dealers and part suppliers at the time. It is believed that the 275 GTB remained in Mr. Kasarjian’s ownership until 1981, when it was sold to Marc Tauber of The Stables Ltd. in New Jersey. Mr. Tauber first sold the car to a client in New York and then handled its sale again in the mid-1980s to Bill Boone of Oklahoma. During this period the car appeared at the Chicago Historic Races, Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, July 1987

In 1990, 08117 returned to Europe for the first time since being exported in 1972 and it has since resided in Switzerland, South Africa, and Austria. Between 1996 and 1998, the car was completely restored, with a team of well-known Italian specialists including Brandoli, Sauro, and Luppi participating in various specialized areas of the restoration. During the restoration process, the aluminum body was refinished in the original Grigio Argento Metallizzato color and the interior was trimmed in black leather. Also at this time, the engine was upgraded from its original three-carburetor setup to the more desirable six-carburetor arrangement for enhanced performance. In January 2009, the Ferrari Classiche department issued certification for 08117, confirming that this 275 GTB retains its original chassis, bodywork, suspension, brakes, engine (internal no. 992/64), and transaxle (internal no. 509). Included with the car are the Ferrari Classiche Certificate of Authenticity and Red Book, Massini Report, and ACI Registration Records.

Since certification was completed, 08117 has taken part in several Ferrari club gatherings and tours, including the Ferrari Club Austria Spring Meeting, May 2013 and, most notably, the Ennstal-Classic Oldtimer Rallye held in Austria during July 2015. 08117 is mentioned specifically in Hilary A. Raab Jr., Ferrari Serial Numbers Part I, chassis number listed p. 89 2015 and the Ferrari Club Austria Yearbook, pictured on p. 97.

As one might expect, the overall condition of this car is breathtaking. The restoration was completed to a very high standard and the condition of the car today exemplifies the high quality and craftsmanship contributed to the car. Despite the passage of time, the presentation remains that of a freshly completed example.

Period correct, ultra-fine flake argento metallic paintwork has been applied over straight panels with excellent panel match at all seams. The exterior finish is free of any marks, aging, or flaws of significance. The brightwork is also free of any deterioration of any kind, and Brandoli stampings can be found on the bottoms of the bumpers on all four corners. The emblems are in beautiful condition, as is the glass. Securit stampings can be found on the quarter, side, and rear windows, whereas the windshield was likely replaced as part of the restoration and displays a Sircurvetro etching in the bottom right corner. The glass is unmarked, as are the correct Carello headlamps. This alloy long nose sits on beautifully restored one-piece alloy wheels as originally delivered, with correct “straight ear” knock offs, and shod with Michelin 205 VR 14 series XWX tires.

The interior is essentially unmarked, and has been beautifully refinished with high quality materials in the original patterns. The dash and console wood has been refinished, as has the factory correct instrumentation and switchgear. The only changes from original in the interior have been made with functionality and safety in mind: A discreetly mounted low oil pressure light below the dash yet still visible to the driver, and mounting posts for three-point safety harnesses. Much like the exterior, the interior has a very fresh presentation.

The engine bay is quite correct in terms of equipment and finishes, and aside from the slightest signs of mellowing, would be difficult to improve upon. The six carburetor upgrade is a marvelous sight and has been professionally installed. Even the window washer bag is present, as are the body rivets within the engine bay drain canal, only present on the rare alloy bodied examples.

Both the cosmetic and mechanical aspects of the underside have clearly been included within the restoration process, and remain in excellent condition overall.

Having been maintained by knowledgeable collectors since its restoration, this 275 GTB presents in outstanding mechanical condition with the high quality cosmetic restoration having mellowed nicely during mild use and showing over the past years. Today, the brilliant performance and road manners one would expect of an alloy-bodied, six-carburetor 275 GTB remain very much in keeping with the legend associated with these amazing cars.
