Audi Coupé GT 2.3 E 1993

General description : Model History

The Audi 80 (B3) received a major facelift in the autumn of 1991, although the UK launch was not until early 1992. It was from then on known internally as the B4. Changes from the B3 included a longer wheelbase, a fully redesigned fuel tank and rear axle to enable the use of folding seats, 15-inch wheels with more prominent wheel arches, redesigned and painted rear and front bumpers, as well as higher-quality materials for the interior, plus a larger boot. The front grille was merged with the bonnet and given a bolder look.

The B4 also marked the beginning of Audi's move into the German luxury mid-sized vehicle segment, which until then was clearly dominated by Mercedes-Benz and BMW. In the European market the B4 and its variants were highly successful and popular.

The Audi Coupe 2.3 E was produced from 1990 to 1994. It was part of the B3/B4 generation Coupe and was a facelift of the 1989 Audi Coupe. Producing 131hp from its naturally aspirated five-cylinder engine it could accelerate from 0-60mph in 9.2 seconds, and on to a top speed of 128 mph. Five-cylinder engines from Audi have achieved cult status – partly due to their successful deployment in motorsport and also on account of their reliability and economy. They have played a vital role in defining “Vorsprung durch Technik” and to this day provide an emotional driving experience with their characteristic sound. With a curb weight of 1170kg it could achieve 32.1 mpg on average, travelling 494 miles before requiring a refill of its 70-litre fuel tank.

Equipment

Crystal Silver Metallic paintwork, 15-inch Dare alloy wheels, Ulter stainless steel exhaust, Rear spoiler, Electric sunroof, Electric windows, Heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, Leather steering wheel and gear knob, Wood interior trim, Anti-lock braking system (ABS), Oil temperature gauge, Oil pressure gauge, Battery Voltmeter, Power steering, Central locking, Spare wheel.

Exterior

The well-proportioned exterior of the Audi Coupe looks great under our studio lighting, the paintwork maintaining a lovely shine across every panel. Both sides of the car are nice and straight, with even panels gaps and no major blemishes to report. All lights are crystal clear with no moisture ingress, and the fresh-looking black plastic trims are without any damage or marking.

Interior

The airy cabin is remarkably clean and tidy, the seats having been fully retrimmed to an impressive standard in recent years. The two-tone upholstery shows no signs of any use – even to the driver’s bolster – and the door cards also look new having been refreshed to match. Glossy wood inlays add a welcome splash of colour and still fitted in the dash you’ll find a nice period-correct Sony cassette player. All the switchgear works just as it should, including the electric sunroof.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 2.3-litre five-pot starts first turn of the key and idles up to temperature smoothly, sounding great through the Ulter sports exhaust. The engine bay is particularly well presented and free from any signs of damage or poor repair. The car boasts a good maintenance history and was most recently serviced in July 2019 at the current mileage.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Audi sits on as-new 15-inch Dare alloys, all impeccably presented and without any marking to the painted spokes or striking polished rims. The wheels are shod in a matching set of tyres, all with at least 6mm of tread remaining. New pads and discs have just been fitted all round ensuring the car stops quickly and in a straight line.

History File

The Coupe was first registered in February 1993; it was supplied new by Gilders Listerdale VW/Audi in Rotheram. The History File is complete with the original document pouch, stamped service book, owners’ manuals, a raft of invoices, and a handful of MOT certificates. The car has been serviced at the following mileages: 4k, 8k, 13k, 16k, 19k, 21k, 22k, 27k, 36k, and most recently at the current mileage of 44k in July 2019. New brake pads and discs have just been fitted all round for the new keeper’s piece of mind. The MOT is valid until July 2020.

About Audi
Audi Automobilwerke GmbH Zwickau was founded by August Horch and his partners. In August 1928, the majority of shares in Audiwerke AG were acquired by Jørgen Rasmussen, the owner of Dampf-Kraft-Wagen (DKW) In 1932, Audi merged with Horch, DKW, and Wanderer, to form Auto Union. Auto Union used the four interlinked rings as their logo, the Audi badge today, representing these four brands.

After the war, Daimler-Benz had taken 100% holding in the Auto Union company by1959. By mid-sixties they had decided to sell to Volkswagen -a decision Mercedes must be regretting by now. Under VW control they took the two-stroke DKW F102, fitted it with a modern Mercedes designed four-stroke engine et voilá a new modern Audi had emerged. The rest, as they say, is history.
