Austin Mini Mk1 1965

General description : Model History

The mk1 was the first version of British Motor Corporation's iconic Mini. It is characterised by its sliding windows and external door hinges; this distinctive two-door car was designed for BMC by Sir Alec Issigonis. The mk1 was manufactured at the Longbridge and Cowley plants in England, and was produced between 1959 and 1967.

The production version of the Mini was demonstrated to the press in April 1959, and by August several thousand cars had been produced ready for the first sales. The Mini was marketed under BMC's two main brand names, Austin and Morris until 1969, when it became a marque in its own right.

Creating such a spacious interior was possible within a comparably small bodyshell because the engine was mounted transversely, driving the front wheels via a gearbox which was uniquely incorporated into the sump of the engine. Engine and gearbox thus shared the same oil, which was in response to the 1956 Suez crisis and the fears of future oil shortages. Interestingly, the original engine size proposed for the Austin Seven was 948cc, as used in the Morris Minor and Austin A35. However, Leonard Lord, chairman of BMC thought that the 90 mph top speed was excessive and thus reduced the engine size to 848cc to gain a more manageable speed of 72 mph.

Equipment

Old English White paintwork, Red Vinyl upholstery, Cooper S front brake disc conversion, Hydrolastic suspension, Bumper over-riders and corner bars, Driver’s A-pillar mirror, Front seat belts, Fresh air heater, Bluetooth radio.

Exterior

Finished in charming Old English White this little mk1 looks marvellous beneath our studio lighting. The car was treated to a full repaint some years ago but as with most older cosmetic refurbishments there are now some small blemishes to be found. On close inspection the brightwork and trim appears in great shape, with the additional ‘1000’ rear badge denoting the car’s larger 998cc engine. Overall the Mini presents in great driving condition, not a garage queen but certainly one to be used and enjoyed on a regular basis.

Interior

With re-upholstered seats and newly fitted carpets throughout the cabin space feels remarkably fresh; the vinyl dash trim and door cards also present well having been replaced not too long ago. An original finish is maintained with some light patina visible to the switchgear and steering wheel, but for modern convenience a period-style Bluetooth radio has been installed, with discreetly fitted speakers below the rear bench.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This 1965 mk1 is equipped with a 998cc engine. It has recently undergone a full mechanical re-commissioning and unleaded cylinder head conversion for the new keeper’s piece of mind. The cylinder head work was carried out by local specialist Roe Engineering and included re-facing, new valves, guides, and seals. Both the engine and engine bay appear in great order with all components in fine mechanical fettle. The car pulls well on test and the original “magic wand” gearbox is a still a joy to operate.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Mini sits on original steels in Old English White, correctly finished with polished hubcaps in excellent condition. The front brakes now boast a Cooper S disc conversion, meaning improved stopping power compared to the factory drums. The tyres have ample tread remaining.

History File

The Mini was first registered in 1965; it was supplied new to South Africa where it was used as a Police car for a number of years. Since arriving in the UK back in 2016 it has been subject to a light cosmetic refresh and hefty mechanical re-commissioning. The paperwork is complete with a verification letter from the British Mini Club and a stack of invoices detailing the work and parts fitted.
