Bentley S1 Saloon James Young 1956

General description : Trade-in car. Some cars have a more intriguing provenance than others. This Bentley S1 James Young is one of those. She was ordered by Lady Docker. Lady Norah Docker was married to Sir Bernard Docker, a very successful British businessman. He was director of the Midlands Bank and the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA, that went on to produce motor cycles) and more over director at Daimler. At the time Daimler also owned Hopper’s Coach builders. Lady Docker loved to make an impression. She also loved designing cars. The Docker Daimlers are world renowned, every one of then were very extravagant cars. The same went for the Dockers. The latter being the reason why things did not end well financially for Sir Bernard. Because of the exorbitant expenses he presented to his companies as being business related, he eventually got relived of all his duties. As often happens with the rich and famous when deprived of their income stream, they died impecunious. After Sir Bernard was sacked by Daimler, Lady Docker sought revenge by driving a Bentley, this Bentley. At the time Bentley was owned by Rolls-Royce and was Daimler’s biggest competitor. And so Lady Docker was able to publicly humiliate Daimler by now driving around in its biggest competitor’s car. This wonderful Bentley S1 James Young is in lovely condition for its age. The car is in need of some attention. The bodywork is in good order. The panels are straight with correctly aligned shut lines. The bodywork also has no rust and the paintwork is neat but is showing some signs of wear that require attention. All the brightwork is very nice and does not need anything more than a good polish. The car is in need of partial restoration and in particular the chassis is not rust-free. The interior trim has stayed in excellent condition. The wood and leather are all original in good shape with a lovely patina. The car has not had a lot of use recently and does need major servicing and maintenance. In short a fantastic Bentley S1 with great provenance. THIS VEHICLE IS IN OUR STORAGE, VIEWING BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

About Bentley
Before becoming a mere subsidiary to Rolls-Royce, Bentley was an independent Automaker famous for the "fastest lorries in the world" e.i Bentley 4½ Litre.

Good ol' Bentley boys (A group of wealthy British motorists, mainly Woolf Barnato, Sir Henry "Tim" Birkin, steeplechaser George Duller, aviator Glen Kidston, S.C.H. "Sammy" Davis, and Dr Dudley Benjafield ) -in their trusty Bentley cars- took four consecutive victories at 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930

In 1931 Bentley was taken over British Central Equitable Trust that later proved to be a front for Rolls-Royce Limited. Unhappy with his role at Rolls-Royce, W.O. Bentley left the company when his contract expired in 1935 duly joining Lagonda. This was beginning of which ultimately led Bentley cars to become more or less badge-engineered Rolls-Royce.
