BMW 325 325i Motorsport 1990

General description : Model History

Brought to the market as an entry-level luxury car, the E30 chassis spanned twelve years of production. Replacing the E21 in 1982 and overlapping its successor, the E36 (introduced in 1990), by four years.

Early models featured the 4-pot M10 and straight-6 M20 engines used in the E21. The major update for the E30 took place in 1987 where the M20 engine was fitted with Bosch Motronic injection and the M10 was replaced by the M40 engine, again utilising Motronic. The chrome bumpers were also replaced with black or coloured ones in late 1989, with the rear light clusters also made slightly bigger during this minor facelift. E30s are now referred to as pre-facelift (chrome bumpers) or facelift (plastic bumpers).

The E30 boasted a spacious cabin and a light curb weight. This was due to the suspension design that utilised Macpherson front struts and rear semi trailing arms. It was also the first 3-Series to receive a service light indicator and warning light. The 325i convertible was the first drop-top solely built by BMW, with early E30s being converted by Baur, a coachbuilder located in Stuttgart. To strengthen the chassis and reduce scuttle shake BMW added plates to the front suspension turrets and built in chassis beams down the length of the car, which helped to reduce flex or twist in the chassis after removing the metal roof.

The 325i Motorsport – as featured here – was a limited production model based on the E30 325i Convertible. The Motorsport kept all the standard 325i running gear but with the addition of M-Tech sports suspension as found on the 325i Sport coupe. Motorsports were offered with a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes, but what made them really unique were the paint colours and special upholsteries they came with. The Motorsport was the only E30 available with what is known as ‘bubble leather’ (depending on the year), and they all came with leather-stitched door cards and centre consoles.

It is widely acknowledged that these cars were made in batches, of which there were four. The limited production started with early un-kitted metal bumpered cars through to plastic-bumpered cars with the M-Tech II kit fitted as standard.

Equipment

Macao Blue Metallic paintwork, Silver ‘Bubble’ leather, Electric-folding soft-top, M-Technic II bodykit, 15-inch BBS alloy wheels, M-Technic suspension, Shadow line exterior trim, 4-Speed automatic transmission with 3 drive modes, Windscreen with anti-glare-strip, Green heat-insulated glass, Hardtop preparation, On-board computer.

Exterior

This family-owned from new Motorsport has lived a cherished life and has always been garaged. All of the panels are original and free from any corrosion damage. Over the years the car had picked up a few stone chips and marks, so in 2019 it was treated to a full strip down and repaint at the BMW main dealer in Worthing. The quality of the paint job really is exceptional and the car now looks close to how it did back in 1990! Where it’s lived a sheltered indoor life all external trims and seals are excellent, and almost all of the clips and bolts have been replaced. The electric hood is original and still in very nice condition with only one wear mark over the driver’s door.

Interior

The interior is in excellent original condition and everything works just as it should, including the electric soft-top. The dash is crack-free, the leather still remains soft, and the often threadbare Motorsport ‘bubble’ leather inserts are perfect. The car is currently fitted with a Blaupunkt Bluetooth stereo that doesn’t look out of place.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This E30 has always been maintained to the highest standards, which is evident by the 25 stamps in the original service book and accompanying raft of invoices. Recent work includes a full service with cambelt and tensioner, and a new steering rack in November 2019, plus a suspension overhaul in July 2020. The engine is as smooth as silk and the car drives like a dream.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

All five of the wheels where professionally refurbished in 2019 to the correct Nogaro Silver finish, with brand new Goodyear tyres also fitted all round. The suspension and brakes have been thoroughly inspected and any worn parts replaced, so the car feels as tight as a drum.

History File

The car has been in the same household from new, being passed to the original owner’s wife in 1997. All of the original paperwork is still with the car including the service book, document pack, spare keys, and a BMW Classic Certificate. The service book contains 25 stamps, the first 8 from BMW and Munich Legends, and the remaining ones from the owner’s local specialist. Almost every original invoice is also with the car detailing all previous works. Everything is up to date with the last cambelt and tensioner change in November 2019.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
