Buick's mighty GS is one of Detroit's all-time automotive success stories. Spawned from one of General Motors' most conservative divisions, it built a fast reputation as one of the meanest and most revered offerings of the muscle car era. Equipped with a newly developed 455-cu.in. engine, the re-badged GS 455 touted a whopping 510-lb.ft. of torque--this from a division that catered to the upright businessman and the moderately successful family alike--bolted into a car that, with the exception of discreet badging, didn't scream "muscle" like its striped brethren. And if that was not enough, there was the Stage 1 option that, when adapted to the 455, produced an additional 10 horses...or so they claimed. Even the contemporary motoring press, specifically Motor Trend, which tested a Stage 1 to a 13.38-second ET at 105.50 MPH (January 1970), was quick to quip that the factory rating was "some kind of understatement of the year."
This amazingly restored 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 convertible, is one of only 67 Stage 1 convertibles equipped with the Muncie 4-speed manual transmission. Being they were built in the pinnacle performance year of 1970, 4-speed-equipped Stage 1 convertibles are commonly referred to as the "Holy Grail" of classic-era Buick GS muscle cars. Few remaining examples approach this one’s exclusivity, for it is one of the most highly optioned cars of its type built.
Invoiced through Francher Buick in Dunkirk, NY on 11/26/1969, this special Buick was ordered new in the attractive code 48 Sherwood Green with a White vinyl top complemented by code 158 Black vinyl bench seat interior. Other factory options include: Power Steering, Power Brakes, Sonomatic Radio, Rear Speaker, Tinted Windshield, Carpet Savers, Protective Body Side Molding, Rallye Steering Wheel and Super Sport wheels with Oversized Whitewall tires.
This Buick's outstanding current condition comes courtesy of a complete concours restoration that was conducted by a Buick marque expert. The professional restoration began with a complete strip of very solid body. With its metal clean and fully prepped, the car's smooth body was carefully sprayed in a correct code 48 Sherwood Green base/clear. The result is an arrow-straight body that displays a super-reflective finish, as a stunning muscle car that literally embodies the term show quality. The beautiful paint is complemented by virtually imperfection free brightwork including a set of NOS wheel opening moldings.
Open the hood and on display is the numbers matching Stage 1 455ci engine which has been detailed as it left the assembly line new. Shifting duties are handled by the numbers matching M21 4-speed manual transmission sending power to the correct 10-bolt rear end. Exhaust gases are jetted through correct, cast iron manifolds, which ride under polished and decaled valve covers. And a correct, heavy-duty radiator utilizes pliable GM hoses and reproduction tower clamps to provide ample cooling. The bright red block looks fantastic, framed in Satin Black fenders and dressed in an array of correct marks and decals. Correct ancillary components, like an authentic Delco Moraine brake booster, a Saginaw steering box and a high-quality Delco battery topper, prove that someone really sweated the details during this Buick's top-notch restoration.
Inside the cockpit is finished in the correct code 158 Black interior that's still restoration-fresh in virtually every way. Comfy bench seats complement stylish, “GS” branded door panels. In front of those thrones, a straight dash hangs upgraded telemetry above a retrofitted AM/FM radio. At the base of that dash, like-new carpet floats heavy duty, shield-branded floor mats at the sides of a familiar Hurst shifter. The driver stays connected to the road thanks to a NOS Buick Rallye Wheel.
This Buick Stage 1 convertible is certainly one of the best available on the market today due to a highly accurate restoration, numbers-matching drivetrain, only a handful of 4 speed car ever built and complete with Sloan documentation.
