Cadillac Eldorado 390 V8 1963

General description : Throughout Cadillac's 116 years of luxury and innovation, one thing has remained the same: the brand has always been about power and presence. From the V16-driven class of the 1930s to the Escalade-driven brawn of the new millennium, GM's top division has found easy success with offerings that embody the American spirit. That's why cars like this brazen Eldorado never go out of style. Pairing dramatic styling and fine comfort with 390 cubic inches of all-American power, this drop-top is the quintessential boulevard baron!
GREAT CARS ENDURE
While this Eldorado isn't, by definition, a survivor, it has endured 56 years of leisurely showboating with minimal repair or rehabilitation. The car's current owner purchased it from a St. Louis resident way back in 2001, and, has literally logged every sunny mile the two have shared. From the assembly line, this classic rolled as a true red-on white Eldorado. However, in the early 1990s, the car was fully stripped and fully resprayed in pigment that's quite a bit more vivid than factory Frost Red. Trim and ornamentation is all well-maintained original stuff, and a power-operated top looks infinitely more graceful than typical convertible vinyl.
WHAT WAS, EXCEPT BETTER
While this Cadillac has always sported a White interior, it hasn't always sported quality white leather from North Carolina's Jenkins Interiors. Specializing in Buick, Cadillac and LaSalle convertibles, Jenkins Interiors is well known among vintage luxury car owners for their craft and attention to detail. Clean hides, stitched in 2007, decorate matching bench seats, the first of which is power-operated and both of which have been equipped with correct Cadillac lap belts. A wood-trimmed dash centers Guide-Matic lamp control over a Quartz-movement clock, switches for factory Cruise Control and upgraded factory air conditioning. Body-matched carpet floats white floor mats between ornate door panels that front electric windows and vacuum-operated locks. And out back, a vacuum-release decklid reveals a trunk that's almost as large as some New York apartments… Almost.
WITH GREAT LUXURY COMES GREAT POWER
That's how the old saying goes, right? At any rate, a Cadillac engine of any displacement can be considered great power, and the 390 cubic inch mill in this Eldorado is smooth, reliable and ready to roll! As previously mentioned, GM factory air conditioning has been fully upgraded to new Freon standards. Speaking of cool, a remanufactured Harrison radiator keeps an eye on engine temps. Speaking of modernization, 1963 was the first year Cadillac swapped old school generators for smaller alternators. And check out the size of that horn in the car's grille!
COMPLETELY UNMODIFIED
Cascade down this drop-top's body-matched firewall, correct to early-1963 builds, and you'll find a solid chassis that, freshly serviced by the RKM Performance Center, still maintains all it's factory specifications. Behind the 390, a smooth Hydra-Matic 4-speed deals torque to a factory axle that's finished with 3.23 gears and a posi-traction differential. That axle pushes a lucid coil spring suspension that's fitted with factory power steering and power-assisted drum brakes. Rumbles are quite and confident, with a single-pipe exhaust system making good use of a factory replacement muffler. And all those components parade on 15-inch steelies, which spin stylish stainless covers inside tall whitewall radials.
Looking for a cruise-worthy classic that's storied but still approachable? You've found your 'city of gold'! This Eldorado is an excellent choice for the enthusiast who wants a desirable car, for good money, that can actually be driven and enjoyed. Leave the $100K metal to the folks on the green. It's time to spend your weekend where it counts: behind the wheel!
