There's no question that the popularity and values on the desirable 1964 Chevrolet Impalas have gone up, but that only means that now is the time to put one in your garage. And sitting right in the fat part of the affordability-versus-condition curve is this beautiful 4-door hardtop, featuring low 'believed-actual' miles on the body, a high-performance 327 V8, and a slick Aqua-on-Aqua color combination that is perfectly befitting a car of this vintage.
Azure Aqua was somewhat of an unusual color in 1964, and it's really a surprise that it wasn't more popular because it looks awesome on the '64 Imp design. If you're going to ante up for Chevy's top-of-the-line personal luxury sedan with a performance streak, light blue delivers a combination of presence and elegance that's tough to beat. And at a cruise-in where everyone else's Impala will be red or white, this one always stands out. Fortunately, this Imp has clearly lived an easy life in the warm and dry state of Texas and has been freshened as needed over the years. It's been repainted at some point in the past and the paint is just fine for going to the local cruise night but maybe not for points competition. Bottom line, it's a very solid driver quality finish that is a definite head turner everywhere it goes. The sheetmetal is still straight and crisp, with great gaps and clear attention to detail, and even the doors have that 'factory flush' shut to them, which is a big deal when you have 4 of them. All the correct brightwork and trim is still intact and in good shape, including the molding inserts on the sides and tail panel, as well as the all-important 'Impala' badges on the rear quarters. The window trim looks newer, while the bumpers are probably original and still shine up great, bearing in mind that this beauty is now 56 years old.
All Chevrolet Impala models got a great-looking interiors, and the Aqua vinyl-with-cloth inserts is certainly long on style as well as comfort. Much like the exterior, this one was likely restored when needed, although many of the components may very well be original and are holding up extremely well considering their age. The seat covers, door panels, headliner, and plush carpets are all in great shape, and even though they present well as they sit, we'd have to think that a professional detail of this entire car would really kick things up a notch. The stylish steering wheel with its two-spoke, dual ring design anchors the cabin dramatically, and the original dash with matching paint and aluminum panels is a wonderful continuation of the exterior theme. The wide instrument panel shows crisp markings on the gauges themselves, and the original AM radio is still in the dash and amazingly still works, joined by a factory A/C system that was upgraded to R134a refrigerant and works great as well. Open the big trunk lid and you'll find a clean set of original floors, an original plaid mat set (although it is a bit tattered after working for the last 56 years), and a full-sized spare tire up on its own little shelf.
The engine is an upgraded, high-performance 327 cubic inch V8 that was swapped in from 1966 Chevrolet, but the job was done so well it looks pretty darn original there in the engine bay. It's not shiny and perfect, but a weekend of cleaning could pay big dividends and if you're the kind of guy who likes driving, then it's already in ideal condition. Chevy Orange paint, a big snorkeled air cleaner up top, and familiar cast iron exhaust manifolds suggest it's never been altered, raced, or abused, and the smooth flow of torque makes this Imp a lot of fun to drive. A few upgraded pieces like the modern alternator and maintained master cylinder suggest that it's been properly serviced and it's got a nice burble from the dual exhaust, which features twin chambered mufflers. A PowerGlide 2-speed automatic transmission channels power to the original-style rear end, and if you're looking around under there, just check out how solid the floors really are: the perks of owning a true Texas car. Power steering helps maneuver the bog body around with ease and 255/75/14 whitewall radials have been fitted to the original wheels with correct Bowtie hubcaps.
So forget investments and instead focus on the fun you could be having with this lovely Impala. It's not perfect, but there's a ton of potential here that could really pay off for the right person. Call today!
