Ford Escort RS2000 16v 1994

General description : Model History

The Mk5 RS2000 was launched in November 1991 with big plans for it to be a worthy successor to the legendary Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts. Ford subsequently launched the RS2000 into its own one-make motorsport series. The events covered rally stages and race circuits around the UK, however, lack of commitment from Ford brought the series to a close after only two years of running.

The RS2000 used the same basic body shell as other Mk5 Escorts. In efforts to reduce insurance premiums the RS2000 was given the familiar appearance of an almost standard Escort of that time. This obviously didn't work as insurance groups maintained their steady mark at group 16! Subtle exterior differences included front indicators moved to the bumper, which also included fog lamps. The front grille and bumper were also modified. Colour-coded side skirts and a rear spoiler were fitted as standard. Other features of the RS2000 included an extensively modified inline-4 16v DOHC engine, based on the Sierra DOHC 8v and controlled by the technically brilliant Ford EEC IV Electronic management control system. Inside, Recaro seats were the most notable feature. Standard fitment was a tilt and slide sunroof, electric windows, and central locking. Lighting on the dash had a unique orange glow with red detailing (almost all Fords had green lighting).

As a road car the Mk5/6 RS2000 has proven itself to be a fantastic package and is to this day very underrated. All in all, an increasingly rare modern classic with real motorsport pedigree.

Equipment

Mallard Green paintwork, Recaro seats in Arcadian Velour, 5-Spoke ‘GTI’ alloy wheels, Rear spoiler, Tilt and slide glass sunroof with blind, Ford cassette radio and CD player, Electric windows, Digital clock, Driver and passenger airbags, Front fog lamps, PAS, ABS, Tailored carpet mats, Spare key, Central locking, Immobiliser, Original spare wheel.

Exterior

The RS2000’s understated exterior looks great in metallic Mallard Green, the paintwork exhibiting an excellent depth of shine and uniform colour all round. The body remains to a very nice standard throughout, with only a handful of small marks and blemishes on close inspection proving the car’s honesty. All the lights are clear and free from signs of moisture ingress, and finer details such as the plastic trims and rubber seals are still notably fresh. The low mileage of 35k is further verified by the superb condition of the underside.

Interior

The Recaro sports seats are a welcome sight and really add to the sense of occasion in that classic ‘90s fabric. The Acardian Velour upholstery is beautifully preserved with the facings free from damage or wear. The deep and supportive bolsters are absolutely firm, still retaining their correct shape and offering near-perfect ergonomics; in the rear the seats appear to have never been sat in. There is no marking to either the dash fascia or centre console, and even the steering wheel is amazingly unworn. This low mileage example also benefits from the original Ford cassette radio and CD player still in place, with no aftermarket speakers having ever been fitted.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Lifting the bonnet reveals a clean and tidy engine bay showing no signs of any accident damage or poor repair. The car performs really well on test and is amazing fun to drive, perfectly at home on our twisty UK B-roads. Since arriving at 4 Star we have had it freshly inspected, serviced and MOT’d for the new keeper’s peace of mind. Prior to this it was last serviced by Ford at 33k miles.

Despite the car’s genuinely low mileage, the engine was actually replaced by Ford back in July 2000 at just 28k miles. The mail dealer invoice present in the paperwork shows this to have been the result of a dislodged valve seat causing damage to the cylinder head. The clutch was also replaced at this time. Having driven only a further 7k miles since then it’s safe to say the engine is barely run-in!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The car sits on period Escort alloys that suit the RS2000 well. They were professionally refurbished and fitted with brand new centre caps last year but still look perfect having seen little use since then. They are shod in a matching set of quality Michelin tyres with plenty of tread remaining, as fitted around 2k miles ago. Brake-wise, we have just had the rear flexible brake hoses replaced and the brake fluid changed.

History File

This low mileage Mk5a RS2000 was first registered in December 1994. It was supplied new to the Isle of Man where it resided until 2017. The car was then UK registered by the current owner and serviced at Evans Halshaw Ford.

In July 2000 at 28k miles the engine was replaced by Ocean Ford on the Isle of Man, and a new clutch was also fitted. The receipt for this work is present in the History File, along with the original service book, owner’s manuals, MOT certificates, and a raft of other invoices. Freshly inspected, serviced and MOT’d she’s good to go!

About Ford
Ford, founded in 1902, has arguably changed the history of automotive world more than any other car manufacturer by introducing the first people's car Model T in 1908. They had produced more than 15 million cars by the end of the production in 1927, by which T had become obsolete.

Ford launched the first low priced V8 engine powered car in 1932. 1932 V8 was an instant hit with superior handling and performance to many far more expansive cars of the day. No wonder 32 V8 Ford has become such a favourite among hot rodders around the world with 32 Deuce coupe as their icon.

During the war Ford completely shut down civilian vehicle production to dedicate all its resources to the Allied war efforts (1942-45) They used to build B-24 bombers, aircraft engines, jeeps, M-4 tanks, military trucks and Bren-gun carriers and more than 30,000 super-charged Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 engines for Mosquito and Lancaster bombers as well as P-51 Mustang fighters. After the war Ford cars in the USA got bigger and flashier along with their competitors. In the 60's Ford was back in the forefront again when introducing their commercial hit Mustang in 1964. Mustang was so popular the competition had to follow Ford's example and the ponycar phenomenon took over the US. Over the years the ponies grew some muscles until the oil crisis kill finally killed them off.

In the sixties Ford rushed into international motor sports scene with a fury. After unsuccessful Ferrari takeover, when Enzo Ferrari had cut the deal off with Henry Ford II making the latter absolutely boil with fury, Ford turned to Lola in UK to produce a Ferrari beating long distance racer after. The collaboration between Ford and Lola created the mighty Ford GT40 that absolutely beat Ferrari in Le Mans 24 numerous times.

In Europe, Ford introduced some of the most epic race and rally cars of the 60's based on humble family sedans; Cortina GT, Lotus Cortina, Escort Twin Cam, and Escort 1600RS with the iconic Cosworth BDA engines.

Today classic Fords are extremely popular with enthusiasts and a great selection of classic Fords can be found for sale at www.ClassicDigest.com
