It’s sleek, stylish and remains full of charm more than 45 years later. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1972 Jaguar XK-E Series III 2+2. The Jagaur XK-E’s have become remarkable collector items over the years. The first year of the third series, this car was built on December 17, 1971 in Coventry, England. This example is one of only 5,143 Jaguar models sold in the US during 1972, during that time Jaguar had 301 dealers nationwide!
This handsome Jaguar’s paint and trim are in overall excellent order, with some slight blemishes upon close inspection. Overall, the car’s bodywork is straight with nice chrome, the engine bay is quite tidy, the battery appears newer and the bumpers are in excellent order.
This big cat rolls on Michelin whitewall radials, size 205/70R14 at all four corners. Each tire surrounds a factory wire wheel with knock offs. The tires are in very good order while the chrome wire knock off wheels are in good shape.
Under the forward-hinged front end (hood, fenders, headlights and front bumper), is the original 5.3L SOHC V-12 engine with four Zenith-Stromberg 175CD2SE carburetors and mated to the original optional Borg-Warner three-speed automatic transmission. The engine was originally developed for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power steering and power disc brakes.
Inside, the dark blue interior is in overall great condition. The Connolly bucket seats are in very good condition, as is the matching Wilton wool carpeting. The headliner is in similar shape while the three-spoke steering wheel looks ready to cruise. The instrument panel, with its array of rocker switches and gauges, is in very good order, as are the inner door panels. The horn is inoperable. Completing the interior are the gearshift lever, the long, silver parking brake lever and a aftermarket AM/FM stereo with CD player.
The E-Type Series 3 was introduced in 1971. The short wheelbase FHC body style was discontinued, with the Series 3 available only as a convertible and 2+2 coupé. The newly used longer wheelbase now offered significantly more room in all directions. The Series 3 is easily identifiable by the large cross-slatted front grille, flared wheel arches, wider tires, four exhaust tips and a badge on the rear that proclaims it to be a V-12.
On its release in March 1961, Enzo Ferrari called it “the most beautiful car ever made.” In 2004, Sports Car International magazine placed the E-Type at number one on their list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s. In March 2008, the Jaguar E-Type ranked first in The Daily Telegraph online list of the World’s “100 most beautiful cars” of all time. Outside automotive circles, the E-type received prominent placement in Diabolik comic series, Austin Powers film series and the television series “Mad Men.”
Competition to this Jaguar in 1972 included the Aston Martin V-8, BMW’s 3.0 CS, Chevrolet’s Corvette, De Tomaso’s Pantera, Jensen’s Interceptor III, Mercedes-Benz’s 450 SLC and Porsche’s 911.
Documentation includes the original owner’s manual.
