Lotus Elan S3 1967

General description : Equipment

British Racing Green paintwork, Black leatherette upholstery, Folding soft-top in black, Tonneau cover in black, Electric windows, Three-spoke leather steering wheel, Wooden gear knob, Pop-up headlights, Twin Weber carburettors, Knock-off steel wheels with chrome embellishers.

Exterior

This lovely little Elan presents in generally tidy condition with a nice shine to the Racing Green paintwork. The body was resprayed a number of years ago and so there are a few minor paint imperfections visible on closer inspection. All of the light lenses remain in excellent condition, the silver bumpers are without any scuffs or scrapes, and the rubber seals remain in good condition but with some light perishing. The chrome work is also lightly patinated but remains in good order, and the pop-up headlights work as they should. The underside is also very solid having previously benefitted from a replacement Spyder chassis. Not a show winner but a great usable driver.

Interior

Climbing inside the Elan is very nostalgic; it offers a fantastic driving position with low seating and the thin-rimmed steering wheel just feels so right. Not being an overly restored car, everything remains in nice original condition with just the right level of patina in our opinion. The wood on the dashboard presents in excellent order and the switchgear still feels reassuringly solid to operate. The door cards and centre console also remain in fine condition, as do the chrome trims around the inside windows and dials.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Opening the lightweight fibreglass bonnet presents a very tidy engine bay with only the usual age-related wear you would expect to find in a 55-year-old Lotus. The cam cover retains a smart blue paint finish, the engine further benefitting from the correct twin-Weber carb setup. Reading through the history file the car has clearly been well maintained over its life, and on test it performed brilliantly down our local country roads.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The steel wheels are in good shape although some cosmetic paint defects are clearly visible; the chrome work, however, remains in excellent order with a lovely mirror shine. The wheels are shod in matching Dunlop SP10 tyres with plenty of tread left, and upon inspection the brakes were also found to be in fine working condition.

History File

This charming example was first registered in June 1967. It has now seen just 4 registered keepers, the current owner having purchased it 23 years ago. The car is accompanied by a great maintenance history with invoices dating all the way back to the late eighties. In more recent years it has been looked after by a trusted local specialist, and following a full inspection on arrival with us, everything appears in fine mechanical fettle.

In 2017 a comprehensive re-commissioning was carried out after a period in storage, this work alone totaling £4,376. The car has also benefitted from a new Spyder chassis in the past and so the underside remains in very good shape indeed. Originally yellow, it’s now finished in quintessential British Racing Green, a superb colour choice especially with the silver bumpers.

About Lotus Elan
The Lotus Elan is a British sports car that was produced by Lotus Cars from 1962 to 1973. It was designed by Lotus founder Colin Chapman and is considered a classic example of British sports car design.

The Elan was powered by a 1.6-liter inline-four engine that produced up to 118 horsepower. It also featured advanced suspension and braking systems, with four-wheel independent suspension and disc brakes on all four wheels.

The Lotus Elan was known for its exceptional handling and performance, with a top speed of up to 120 mph and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 7 seconds. Its lightweight fiberglass body and advanced suspension system made it a popular choice among sports car enthusiasts of the time.
