Mercedes-Benz 190SL 1956

General description : Model History

The Mercedes-Benz 190SL was a two-door luxury roadster produced between May 1955 and February 1963. Internally referred to as W121, it was first shown in prototype at the 1954 New York Auto Show and was available with an optional removable hardtop. The 190SL presented an attractive, more affordable alternative to the exclusive Mercedes-Benz 300SL, sharing its basic styling, engineering, detailing, and fully independent suspension. While both cars had double wishbones in front and swing axles at the rear, the 190SL did not use the 300 SL's purpose-built W198 tubular spaceframe. Instead, it was built on a shortened monocoque R121 platform modified from the W121 small saloon.A new 104hp 1.9-litre straight-four engine powered the 190SL. The car was available either as a soft-top convertible (initially priced at DM 16,500) or with removable hardtop (DM 17,650). A small third-pas

Exterior

The classically beautiful lines of the SL never fail to impress, looking particularly elegant beneath our studio lighting. The metallic silver paintwork presents superbly all round and has to be one of the most iconic colour choices for any vintage Mercedes. Having been restored to a high standard in recent years, the overall finish is extremely good with all the brightwork retaining an excellent shine throughout.

Both front and rear Bosch light lenses are in perfect condition with no cracks or moisture ingress to report. The current owner has recently treated the SL to a brand new soft-top in blue, making for a lovely contrast against the sublime silver paintwork. The SL also comes equipped with a removable hardtop in silver.

Interior

The interior space is a stunning place to be with the brightwork of the dashboard, push-pull switchgear, and over-sized steering wheel in ivory-white. The blue bucket style seats, matching door cards, sun visors, and dash top are all in excellent condition having been re-upholstered to a very high standard in recent years. This example has also been treated to a complete set of new carpets which remain in superb condition throughout with blue piped edges.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 190SL is powered by Mercedes’ 1.9-litre M121 in-line 4 engine. The engine bay looks in first-rate condition, with most ancillary components having been either restored or replaced to maintain a fresh appearance. Most recently the valve clearances were adjusted and the carburettors tuned; a fresh oil service and MOT have also just been carried out to ensure the car remains in fine mechanical order, ready to be enjoyed. On test the fully synchronised four-speed manual gearbox feels smooth to operate, pulling through the rev range with ease.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 13-inch wheels look fantastic with their freshly painted hubcaps. Upon close inspection, each wheel is in fine order with no unsightly curb marking or scratches. The steel wheels are shod in a matching set of period correct Michelin ZX tyres, all with plenty of tread remaining. The power-assisted drum brakes do a fine job, operating faultlessly on test.

History File

The Mercedes 190SL was first registered in Germany in February 1956. Since then it has undergone a recent restoration before being purchased and imported to the UK in 2015 by the current owner. It is now fully UK-registered with a V5C document and all taxes paid. Upon arrival at 4 Star the car had a full health check and, despite now being exempt, was given a fresh 12 month MOT for the new keeper’s peace of mind.
