General description : Offered up for sale here we have this clearly cherished 1980 Mercedes-Benz 350SL Auto. The car is presented in very original condition throughout, and is eminently usable yet can easily stop you in your tracks with its glossy white paintwork and arrow straight body. The car also boasts a truly exceptional, fully re-trimmed bespoke interior, carried out to the original Mercedes-Benz specification, using only the finest materials and hides sourced from Germany. The original interior was a black mb tex vinyl interior, and the fastidious former keeper commissioned ourselves to transform the staid cabin into a show stopping and palatial interior, with a colour change to the stunning crème beige it now wears. No expense was spared, and every area that could have been trimmed to leather was, including the one-off centre console, handbrake shroud and lower dash, to the addition of a centre armrest and the fitment of custom made Zebrano wood cappings to match and accentuate the existing veneers on the centre console. We also added modern Dynamat sound proofing throughout the vehicle to increase refinement within the cabin. A later 107 optional leather steering was duly fitted (after being retrimmed of course) which also gives improved leg room due to its smaller diameter. The sound system of the car was upgraded to include a very subtle active subwoofer speaker under the seats to improve the cabin acoustics of the period stereo unit. Very discreet but a big improvement in the sound quality of the cars sound system without being at all intrusive or visible within the classic cabin.
Coming with a history file to die for, archived documentation that has been chronologically ordered from the very beginning, all handbooks and even the spare blade key, the provenance of the car is exceptional. This classic SL has covered just 96,467 miles from new and has had a complete engine and gearbox rebuild, which is evident in the way the car drives. They don’t get any better than this one on the road – it really can be described as the quintessential V8 R107 driving experience. Since the engine and gearbox rebuilds, close to £30,000 has been spent with us here at Hilton and Moss looking after and maintaining this vehicle to the most exacting standards – meaning its condition is amongst some of the best you will find of any R107 that hasn’t been bare shell restored. The vehicle has only 4 former keepers and has covered on average only 2500 miles a year. The driving experience is just as good as the aesthetics, with a smooth gear change and plenty of power throughout the RPM range. The 3.5 litre V8 engine runs faultlessly and you really do have to drive this SL to understand just how good an example it is. The car also benefits from the ‘facelift’ front chin spoiler which gives the car a modern but subtle improvement over the standard finish. The original steel wheels and wheel trims remain shod in Vredstein Sprint Classics which give the period correct look, for those with an eye for detail. The car still retains its original factory hardtop, with new headlining, new heated rear glass and a paintwork refresh to complete its classic appearance, and for those summer months the car has a nearly new Dark blue mohair hood in fantastic and still very taut condition.
We have known this vehicle for several years now and have carried out a huge amount of work and maintenance during this time before purchasing the car ourselves, owing to the devoted former keeper having a change of circumstances meaning their relationship with the car drew to a regrettable close. Some of the work we carried out includes a new genuine top tint windscreen and trims, new shock absorbers all round with new front springs, overhauled ignition system and we have also serviced the vehicle a large number of times during this period (regardless of the paltry mileage accrued) to ensure the car continues to run perfectly for many more miles to come. The car also comes with an attractive private plate that has been registered on the car for a number of years.
