General description : Model History

Designed and built as a grand tourer the SL was first introduced in 1954. The designation SL derives from the German "Sport Lightweight" and was first applied to the 300SL Gullwing. The SL model range is still in production today and has spanned five generations of models from 1954 to the present day.

The R129 as featured here is the fourth generation of car and was built from 1989-2002. Featuring a shorter wheelbase and updated rear suspension over its predecessor, the R107, the R129 was quick to introduce model updates and featured a large amount of styling, mechanical, and technological updates over its 12 year life span.

The R129 shot to the public's attention in 1991 when Diana, Princess of Wales sold her Jaguar to purchase a 500SL. This sparked a media storm as this was the first time a member of the royal family had chosen a foreign car. The media questioned whether British royalty should be driving foreign cars and eventually due to pressure she was forced to return the car to Mercedes-Benz in 1992. The car now features in the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

Exterior

This V8 SL is beautifully presented in rare Green Black Metallic with contrasting beige leather upholstery, a striking combination that’s perfectly offset by the AMG alloy wheels. The paintwork shows very few signs of age with a deep gloss to all of the upper panels; free from any scuffs or scratches the lower sections retain their correct satin sheen. This UK-supplied example was specified from new with the desirable panoramic glass hardtop option. Once that’s removed, the electric folding soft-top operates smoothly at the touch of a button. The fabric remains in excellent unworn condition with no damage to the rear window.

Interior

The bright and airy cabin boasts a glossy walnut finish to the centre console, door panels, and steering wheel. Looking across the heated and electrically adjustable front seats the upholstery appears in wonderful condition with no damage to the bolsters; the sought-after rear seats are trimmed in the same supple leather and are free from any marking. A set of genuine Mercedes-Benz overmats ensure the footwell carpets remain clean, and there are no unsightly scuffs to the delicate door speaker covers. The centre console also presents in excellent condition showing no scratches or wear to the trim. At the rear of the car the boot area is still perfectly clean, neatly housing the Mercedes first aid kit, original tool roll, and removable wind defector.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The Mercedes 5-litre V8 is a perfect complement to the R129. With effortless power delivery and a smooth auto ‘box, the SL500 is a capable long distance cruiser that’s equally suited to daily use. Lifting the bonnet of this example you’ll find the engine bay still looking fresh. With a mere 45k miles to its name the engine remains in excellent fettle. The low mileage is fully verified by a great maintenance record and raft of past MOT certificates.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The two-piece 18-inch alloys suit the R129 well and fill the arches nicely. All the wheels are in pristine condition aside from some light curb marking to the nearside front. They are shod in a matching set of Dunlop tyres that were fitted about 5k miles ago; the discs and pads were replaced all round 4k miles ago. A set of four Bilstein B4 shocks were also fitted at this point, costing nearly £1,700 all in.

History File

The SL was first registered in August 1996. It was supplied new by Reliance Mercedes-Benz in Chingford. The History File contains plenty of invoices and documentation along with the original owner’s pack and maintenance booklet. The car has been serviced at the following mileages: 1k, 9k, 17k, 19k, 22k, 26k, 37k, 38k, 41k, and most recently at 45k miles in August 2017. The MOT does not expire until September 2019.
