Peugeot 205 GTI 1992

General description : Model History

The 205 GTI had everything when new – sharp handling, light weight for added chuckability, and an unburstable engine that sings the more you rev it.

Ever since the first 1.6-litre 205 GTI went on sale in April 1984, the eulogies to the car have appeared thick and fast. With 105hp on tap from its all-alloy 1580cc four-pot, superb handling, and reasonable build quality, the 205 GTI soon became a favourite with the motoring press and car buyers alike. Sometimes owners got a bit carried away and overcooked it on the bends, sometimes those who pranged the car had ‘borrowed' it without asking, but everyone who drove it reckoned the little Pug was one of the best drives available, at any money.

In 1985 Peugeot's barking mad 205 T16 rally car won the World Rally Championship, and in 1986 the convertible 205 GTI went on sale, neatly badged the CTI. Peugeot were on the crest of a wave with their small hatch.

Things got even more fun – and more easily out of shape – when the 1.9-litre car arrived in January 1987 with 130hp and disc brakes all round. So that it wasn't overshadowed by its bigger brother, tweaks to the cylinder head and camshaft in 1987 meant power for the 1.6-litre car rose to 115hp.

Equipment

Cherry Red paintwork, Black and red chequered cloth upholstery, 14-inch “pepper pot” alloy wheels, Peugeot Clarion cassette radio, Sunroof, Three-spoke leather-trimmed GTI steering wheel, Digital clock, Front fog lights, Lockable glove compartment, Cigarette lighter, Ash tray, Spare wheel.

Exterior

The Cherry Red paintwork is in sensational condition with no fading and almost no imperfections to speak of. 8 years ago we sold the 205 to the current owner who has an amazing collection of cars, all stored indoors. The previous lady we sold the car for had owned it from 1994 and also kept it garaged. This example really is in time-warp condition as none of the plastic or rubber trims have been sun-damaged, all of the lights are crystal clear, and the body panels are all pin sharp.

Interior

The delicate 205 cloth seats remain in first-rate condition with minimal wear and absolutely no fading from the sun. Normally the carpets lose some of their vivid colouring but that’s not the case with this example as they still appear as new. Everything feels tight and fresh within the cabin, all the controls work exactly as they should, and there is no damage or marking to any of the interior trim.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The mechanics of this car are exceptional having almost always been serviced within the dealer network. The current owner of 8 years is a true classic car enthusiast/collector who enjoys driving his cars, and so keeps them in perfect mechanical condition. Recent work since the last cambelt change in 2016 includes a new manifold, coolant temperature sensor, and fuel pressure regulator. We have all driven the car and are in agreement – it’s certainly one of the best having lost none of its magic!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

When we sold the car last we had the wheels fully refurbished by Lepsons; the quality of the refurb has really stood the test of time as they still remain in perfect, unmarked condition. The alloys are shod in a matching set of period-correct Pirelli P600 tyres, all of which have plenty of tread left.

History File

This example has one of the best histories we have seen of any of the 205s we have sold here at 4 Star. The maintenance booklets are filled with a total of 18 stamps from almost all Peugeot main dealers; the last cambelt change was carried out at Peugeot in Walton on Thames in September 2016 at 69,941 miles. The History File also includes all of the owners’ manuals along with every MOT certificate to 100% confirm the low mileage of 71k. The current owner purchased the car from us eight years ago, with only three keepers before him. A fresh oil service will be carried out upon sale for the new keeper’s piece of mind.
