Built during the first week of April 1967 at GM’s Pontiac, Michigan assembly plant, and something very rarely seen is that this GTO was custom ordered to one of the GM export sales locations, zone 40, #205 Mercer Auto Storage, Bronx, NY.  This is one of only 13,827 GTO hardtops Pontiac produced in 1967 with the 400ci HO V8 and even much more less produced with the M21 4-speed option with the 4.33 HD Saf-T-Track rear differential. Also optioned with #501 power steering, #502 power brakes, #444 cluster tach, #454 Rally I wheels, #472 center console, #482 exhaust extensions, #532 soft ray glass #631 front and rear parchment mats, rear speaker and dealer installed rear power antenna, rear defroster and red fender liners.
This particular GTO was purchased in 1986 by a engineering professor at Drexel University who owned the car until 2016. The car was the featured cover car of the GTO Association of America “The Legend” magazine July of 1995 quoting the owner statement about his car “The red ’67 hardtop on this month’s cover belongs to none other than Frank Guinto. It took Frank many phone calls and lots of looking to locate just the right car to replace his GTO from long ago.”  Frank owned this GTO for 30 years and he was a GTO enthusiast who kept this GTO as nice as possible and did a full restoration in 2009. A large stack of extensive receipts from Frank’s 30 years of ownership is included with the sale.
This GTO is dressed in correct Regimental Red paint with correct red fender liners and white trim that are in overall excellent condition. The car’s bodywork is straight and the body gaps are very nice and what you want to see, the engine bay is extremely tidy and the battery appears in very good order. The chrome bumpers shine brilliantly as well the rockers and trim.
This Goat rolls on BFGoodrich Radial T/As, size 215/70R14 at all four corners, mounted on the correct factory Rally I wheels. The wheels are in great, original shape while the tires are in very good condition.
Pop the hood and the first thing you’ll notice is a numbers matching High Ouput 400 cubic inch Pontiac V8 engine with 10.75:1 compression, producing over 360HP and breathing via dual exhausts (code WS, engine #499942). The HO used altered ignition tuning and cam timing, and better intake/exhaust breathing to make 360hp. The egeine, the drivetrain and the suspension where completely rebuild in 2009 with full documentation included. Backing this motor is the aforementioned RPO 778 M21 4-speed close ratio transmission #P7T13. Driver convenience features include power steering and power brakes.
The original ZL code 4.33 HD Saf-T-Track rear differential gears were replaced by the local owner we purchased this car from. On 06/29/2018 the factory 4.33 gears were replaced with 3.55 gears along with a full rear axle service (receipt included). The original factory gears #39-9GM2-67E are still included and could be swapped back in.
Open this coupe’s doors and you’ll find a correct GM code 224 Parchment interior that’s simple yet sporty. Interior is in overall very good order. The Strato front buckets are in very good condition and offer a great contrast to the car’s paint. The black carpet and white headliner offer even greater contrast especially with the correct parchment factory floor mats. The three-spoke steering wheel with its wooden rim, is in great, original shape. The inner door panels and dashboard, with its walnut grain insert for a touch of warmth, are all in very good order. Between the bucket seats is a console mounted Hurst shifter and a small grab bar is available to the front seat passenger. Rounding out this interior is a factory AM-FM stereo with a factory rear speaker and defroster in the rear package shelf. The dash also features the power antenna control, rear speaker control and the rear defroster control.
The GTO underwent a few styling changes in 1967. The louver-covered taillights were replaced with eight tail lights, four on each side. Rally II wheels with colored lug nuts were also available in 1967. The GTO emblems located on the rear part of the fenders were moved to the chrome rocker panels. The grill was changed from a purely split grill, to one that shared some chrome.
The GTO also saw several mechanical changes in 1967. The Tri-Power carburetion system was replaced with a single four-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carburetor. The 389 CID engine received a larger cylinder bore for a total displacement of 400 CID, which was available in three models: economy, standard and high output as this particular GTO is optioned with.
The 1967 model year required new safety equipment. A new energy-absorbing steering column was accompanied by an energy-absorbing steering wheel, padded instrument panel, non-protruding control knobs, and four-way emergency flashers. A shoulder belt option was also featured, and the brake master cylinder was now a dual reservoir unit with a backup hydraulic circuit. Front disc brakes were also an option in 1967.
Competition to this GTO in 1967 included Buick’s Skylark GS 400, Chevrolet’s Chevelle SS396, Dodge’s Charger R/T 440, Mercury’s Cougar XR-7, Oldsmobile’s 442 Holiday Coupe and Plymouth’s GTX Super Commando.
Desirably optioned 1967 Goats like this one do not linger at MotoeXotica Classic Cars or on the market for very long, so if you’re a fan of Pontiacs, General Motors A-body cars or just like a late-60s American muscle car with some true factory grunt, you should visit our showroom today!
