LMC is very proud to offer for sale this 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster

In the mid 1980’s, Porsche President Peter Schultz approved a modern update as a way to reignite some of the original 1950’s Speedster excitement. The original Porsche 356 Speedster of 1954–1959 was to be an inexpensive sports car for the youth market. Its good looks and minimalist equipment, which included a cut-down windshield and “emergencies only” top, clicked with customers…including Hollywood Star James Dean who helped make the car famous. The 1989 Speedster was a single model year offering which not coincidentally was the 25th anniversary of the 911.

Only 2,104 of the new Speedster were built between January and September of 1989 for global production and of that total only 823 were delivered new to the US. The Speedster, option M503, was the last variant based on the outgoing K program chassis, that was to be replaced by the new Type 964. Porsche offered the new Speedster in both slant nosed and turbo body variants in Germany but only the turbo look was sold to the US customers. The 911 Speedster was distinctly shaped by Porsche’s styling department under the direction of Tony Lapine. It offered a cut down windshield reminiscent of the original that was more than 3 inches lower and raked 5 degrees flatter than that of the standard Cabriolet, a minimal single layer fabric top and a twin ‘camel humps’ fiberglass tonneau covered the area where the occasional rear seats would normally reside. The front quarter windows were eliminated and the new side windows were manually operated. Like the original 356 Speedster the new version was rarely seen with its top up.

This 1989 Porsche Speedster was purchased new by actor Nicolas Cage and is one of just 823 imported into the United States in that model year. In 2002, Cage hired a transporter to move his car from Los Angeles to Philadelphia. In route to the destination the driver stopped in Arnold, Missouri, to visit with his parents. On Christmas Day, a teenage car thief stole the Speedster and eventually rolled it off a boat ramp, submerging it in the Lake of the Ozarks. At that point in time, the car had a mere 150 miles on the odometer. The car was later obtained by a marque specialist and restored back to showroom condition. The car now has 3,026 miles on the odometer, driven 2,876 miles since its restoration, and presents in immaculate condition with its gleaming black exterior, rich black-leather interior and satin-finished Fuchs wheels.

Documenting this Speedster is a previous California title in Nicholas Cage’s name, a signed copy of the Gone in 60 seconds screenplay, signed Gone in 60 seconds poster and tool roll.

About Porsche 911 / 964
The Porsche 964 is the internal designation for the Porsche 911 models produced between 1989 and 1994. It was the successor to the Porsche 3.2 Carrera and was designed to be a more refined and modern version of the classic Porsche 911.

One of the major changes in the 964 was the introduction of an all-wheel-drive system, called the Carrera 4. The 964 was also the first Porsche 911 to feature power steering, anti-lock brakes, and an airbag as standard equipment. In addition, the suspension was updated to provide a smoother ride and better handling.

The 964 was powered by a range of engines, including a 3.3-liter turbocharged flat-six, a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, and a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six. The top-of-the-line 964 Turbo S was capable of producing 385 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the fastest production cars of its time.

Today, the Porsche 964 is considered a classic sports car and is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. While it may not have the same level of performance as some of the newer Porsche 911 models, the 964 is still a thrilling car to drive and offers a unique driving experience that is difficult to replicate with modern cars.

As a hobbyist car, the Porsche 964 is popular among collectors and enthusiasts who enjoy working on and restoring classic cars. Its relatively simple design and mechanics make it a good choice for those who are interested in learning about automotive restoration and maintenance.

Overall, the Porsche 964 is an important part of Porsche's history and remains a beloved car among automotive enthusiasts around the world. Its unique combination of classic styling, modern features, and high performance capabilities make it a true icon of the Porsche brand.
