Porsche 968 Club Sport 1994

General description : Model History

The Porsche 968 was introduced to the world back in 1991. A great sports car also ideal for touring, the standard 968 coupe came with a 3-litre, 4-cyclinder engine producing 225lb ft of torque and 240hp. Soon after, Porsche set their sights on creating a car tailored more for the driving enthusiast and, in particular, one that would excel on track. In late 1992, the 968 Club Sport was born. Mechanically identical, sharing the same engine and 6-speed gearbox as the standard coupe, the only difference between the two cars was weight saving and a reduction in ride height, and, at the time of its launch, the Club Sport was considerably cheaper.

In total only 1,923 Club Sports were produced worldwide between 1992 and 1995. The Club Sport was offered in five colours during model year 1993 (Black, Guards Red, Maritime Blue, Grand Prix White, and Speed Yellow) but other colours were available during model years 1994 and 1995.

There has been, over the years, a misconception in the motoring press that Club Sports are only Club Sports when they have bucket seats, wind up windows, no sunroof, manual hatch, etc. However, the Club Sport was available to order with any number of options – and it frequently was. It is very common to see Club Sports with Recaro cloth comfort sport front seats, electric windows, sunroof and even rear seats and air conditioning, while still sporting the Club Sport badge - especially in parts of Europe and Australia.

In 1994 and 1995, Porsche GB ordered a total of 306 cars from the Club Sport production line for import. Superficial spec changes included the addition of the Club Sport luxury package option, along with the removal of the rear 968 CS badge. These cars, marketed to attract British buyers looking for a little more comfort, were badged in the UK as 'Sport'. However, Porsche Germany lists them as Club Sports, including on their Certificates of Authenticity. The Sport badge is a UK-specific label, which, nowadays, serves to cause some confusion as to the car's identity.

Equipment

Colour-coded Recaro bucket seats, Leather Club Sport steering wheel, 17-inch Cup 2 alloy wheels in yellow, Porsche calipers in black, ‘Club Sport’ decals, Rear wiper delete, Manual windows, Manual tailgate release, Electric sunroof with cover, Alpine head unit, Lockable glove compartment, Coin holder, Porsche immobiliser, Spare wheel, Tool roll, Spare key.

Exterior

With its vibrant Speed Yellow paint, matching Cup 2 alloys and contrasting Club Sport decals, this rare UK-supplied example (1 of 179) has to be one of the best looking 968s around. The bodywork is wonderfully glossy with no major blemishes and only one or two small touched-in marks to report. There are very few stone chips to the front end and the lights remain crystal clear. All in all, a magnificent example still looking fresh at 83k miles.

Interior

Upon entry you’re greeted by lightweight Recaro bucket seats colour-matched to the exterior, both in excellent condition. The dash, leather gear knob, and centre console are all unmarked and the steering wheel still looks new. In the footwells you’ll find tailored Porsche overmats, with spotless aluminium trims protecting the door entry sills. Towards the rear of the car the generously proportioned boot is immaculate and complete with the original luggage net and toll roll. The only non-standard items to note are a tasteful Alpine head unit and rear speakers.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Praised for its superior handling the 968 Club Sport was named ‘Performance Car of the Year’ in 1993 soon after its launch. Under the bonnet you’ll find the 4-cylinder 3-litre engine, with power transferred to the rear wheels via the smooth 6-speed gearbox. The engine bay of this example is remarkably clean and tidy with no damage, corrosion or signs of poor repair to be found. We have just had the car serviced and fully inspected for the new keeper’s piece of mind.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 968 sits on pristine Cup 2 alloys finished in yellow. Each wheel is in perfect condition with coloured Porsche crests and no curb marking to report. The wheels are shod in matching Falken tyres, all with at least 6mm of tread remaining. The brakes are in fine condition too, bringing the car to a halt swiftly and in a straight line.

History File

The 968 was first registered in February 1994. Supplied new by Parkwood Porsche in Kent it is one of just 179 true Club Sports produced for the UK – a rare car indeed. The History File is complete with a raft of main dealer and specialist invoices, numerous past MOT certificates, and the leather document pouch with all manuals. The service booklet is stamped up to the current mileage of 83k, with a total of twelve service entries from both Porsche and Porsche specialists.

About Porsche 968
The Porsche 968 was the final evolution of the Porsche 944, and it was produced from 1992 to 1995. Some critics have argued that the 968 was "too little, too late" in terms of Porsche's efforts to compete with other sports cars of the era.

One of the main criticisms of the Porsche 968 was its high price tag, which made it less competitive against other sports cars such as the Mazda RX-7, Nissan 300ZX, and Chevrolet Corvette. Additionally, the 968 was introduced at a time when the sports car market was declining, due to economic recession and changing consumer preferences.

Despite these challenges, the Porsche 968 was well-received by critics and enthusiasts, who praised its performance, handling, and build quality. The 968 featured a range of advanced technologies, such as a VarioCam variable valve timing system and a 6-speed manual transmission.
