Blending the style and grace of 1930s automobiles like Auburn and Duesenberg with the modern amenities and structure of Ford’s Mustang, MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1987 Zimmer Golden Spirit Coupe. This handsome car comes from a local collector that has decided to downsize his collection. We also have the collector’s 1937 Ford and 1948 DeSoto available for sale.
Built in Pompano Beach, Florida, this example has had only three prior owners and has been stored in a garage since 2007. It was reportedly only driven to local weekend car shows whenever possible. Finished in black, with burgundy and amethyst pinstriping, landau roof, Continental-style spare tire in the rear and a pair of side-mounted spares ahead of the running boards and covered trunk with external luggage rack. The car’s paint and trim are in overall very good condition, with only minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The car’s coachwork is in excellent order, straight and solid. The engine bay is quite tidy and the car’s dual-bladed bumpers look fantastic. Perched above the front bumper are fog lights and quad air horns.
This Zimmer rolls on Coker Classic wide whitewall tires mounted on 15-inch wire wheels. The tires and wheels are all in good, original order. Golden Spirits offer independent front suspension with a four-link rear suspension and front and rear stabilizer bars.
Under the hood is a 302 CID V-8 engine with electronic fuel injection backed by a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and a 2.73 differential with Traction-Lok. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes with ventilated discs in front, power windows, power mirrors, power locks, dual power seats, cruise control, power trunk release and intermittent wipers.
Inside, the Zimmer has a burgundy leather interior with woodgrain accents. The seats are in good, original condition, as is the matching carpet and headliner. There’s a sharp, three-spoke Nardi steering wheel with a wood rim, an instrument panel with full instrumentation, and inner door panels that are all in good, original order. The right door window switch is inoperable and the left side power seat does not operate forward and reverse. There are overhead map and reading lights and rear vases. The center console has matching woodgrain accents and a Pioneer AM/FM stereo with a CD player completes the interior.
To create Zimmer Golden Spirits, Ford supplied new Mustangs, which were then modified by stretching the frame for a longer wheelbase and modifying the bodywork etc. The Zimmer is considered an “era” car. Era cars were built from readily available parts (VW or Sprite convertible body, Corvette suspension, Buick/Lincoln/Chevrolet engines, etc.) and made to replicate the long hood, exposed headlight, side-mount spare tire-look of the classics of the 1930s.
The Golden Spirit was the flagship automobile for the Zimmer Motorcars Corporation. Zimmer produced more than 1,500 Golden Spirits during its 10-year production run. Zimmer used the Ford Mustang chassis and drivetrain in the construction of the original Golden Spirit.
Documentation includes a copy of the 1987 Zimmer owner’s manual, several Zimmer brochures from 2005 to 2008, service records from 2006 to date and more.
Competition to this Zimmer in 1987 included the Clénet, the Excalibur and the Stutz Blackhawk. If vehicles such as these are your cup of tea, you should make a point of stopping by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to review this Zimmer in person.

About Zimmer
Zimmer Motorcars Corporation is an American automotive company known for producing neo-classic luxury automobiles. The company was founded by Paul Zimmer in the late 1970s and gained attention for crafting cars that echoed the styling of classic cars from the 1920s and 1930s, while integrating modern engineering and technology. Here's an overview of Zimmer's story:

Establishment and Vision:
Founding: Paul Zimmer established Zimmer Motorcars Corporation in 1978 in Syracuse, New York. The company aimed to create handcrafted luxury automobiles inspired by classic designs.
Neo-Classic Design Philosophy: Zimmer's approach involved blending modern automotive engineering with the elegance and aesthetics of vintage luxury cars, particularly those from the pre-World War II era.
Zimmer Golden Spirit and Other Models:
Zimmer Golden Spirit: The flagship model, the Golden Spirit, was introduced in the early 1980s. It was a neo-classic luxury car based on the chassis of existing American-made vehicles but extensively modified to resemble classic cars of the 1920s and 1930s.
Other Models: Apart from the Golden Spirit, Zimmer produced various models with similar neo-classic design cues, such as the Quicksilver, Golden Spirit Convertible, and others, maintaining the vintage-inspired aesthetic across its lineup.
Production and Legacy:
Handcrafted Luxury: Zimmer cars were meticulously handcrafted, focusing on luxurious interiors, ornate detailing, and unique features, catering to customers seeking exclusivity and distinctive designs.
Limited Production: The company maintained a limited production output, contributing to the exclusivity and rarity of Zimmer automobiles.
Challenges and Changes:
Evolving Market: As consumer tastes shifted and regulations became more stringent, demand for neo-classic cars waned. Zimmer faced challenges due to changing market dynamics and evolving automotive industry standards.
Changes in Ownership: The company underwent changes in ownership and experienced periods of financial difficulties, impacting its operations and the production of new models.
Legacy and Collectibility:
Collector's Items: Despite the challenges faced, Zimmer cars gained a following among collectors and enthusiasts due to their unique designs, retro styling, and the nostalgia they evoked for classic luxury automobiles.
Cultural Impact: Zimmer automobiles hold a place in automotive history for their distinctive neo-classic styling and craftsmanship, reflecting a particular era's fascination with vintage aesthetics and luxury.
Zimmer Motorcars Corporation, through its neo-classic luxury cars, left an imprint on the automotive industry by reviving classic designs in a modern context. While the company faced challenges and changes over time, its cars remain collectible items valued for their unique blend of vintage-inspired styling and modern engineering.
