BMW 325 325i Sport 1987

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History

Brought to the market as an entry level luxury car, the E30 chassis spanned 12 years of production. Replacing the E21 chassis in 1982 and overlapping its successor the E36 introduced in 1990 by 4 years.

Early models featured the 4-pot M10 and straight-6 M20 engines used in the E21. The major update for the E30 took place in 1987 where the M20 engine was fitted with Bosch Motronic injection and the M10 engine replaced with the M40 engine again utilising motronic. The chrome bumpers were also replaced with black or body-coloured ones in late ‘89 and the rear light made slightly bigger during this minor facelift. E30s are now referred to as pre-facelift (chrome bumpers) and facelift (plastic bumpers). The E30 boasted a spacious cabin and a light curb weight, this was due to the suspension design that utilised Macpherson front struts and rear semi trailing arms. It was also the first 3-Series to receive a service light indicator and warning light.

The 325i Sport was a 325i model specified with M-Tech options from BMW's Motorsport division. It was available in most markets including mainland Europe, Japan, South Africa, and Australia. Aside from the standard M-Tech/Sport Package, customers could choose further optional extras from the general catalogue that were available on all standard factory models. Aside from the M-Technic features, 325i Sports shared the same 2-door bodyshell, M20 engine, and drivetrain components with all standard 325i cars. All parts used to create the Sport were optional on the rest of the E30 range apart from the Anthracite interior headlining.

Equipment

Exterior

The gleaming grey paintwork presents to an excellent standard throughout, with no signs of any wear to be found - our studio photos really don't do it justice. A full restoration was carried out back in 2014 and the car has been carefully dry stored ever since. Early stages of the restorative work included stripping the body shell back to bare metal; any areas showing signs of age were professionally repaired before a fresh coat of Dolphin Metallic was applied to the exterior, interior, underside, and engine bay. Freshly re-chromed bumpers were then fitted for a more classic look; the original body-coloured ones are included with the sale and could easily be re-fitted should the new keeper so desire.

The car now presents absolutely as new, having more recently been treated to a professional detail including Gtechniq ceramic paint protection with PPF also applied to the front end (totalling in the region of £4k).

Interior

The time-warp theme continues inside; the interior presents immaculately throughout and is a real testament to the car's careful ownership from new. The houndstooth sports seats show almost no signs of wear and the carpets are still protected by the original set of BMW overmats. Better yet, this example also boasts a period correct and complete Blaupunkt sound system. Travelling to Germany to source the radio components, the previous owner was fortunate enough to find two period amplifiers as well as a 1988 touch screen graphic equalizer - all brand new in their boxes! The Woodstock cassette radio was a top of the range option in 1987, and still remains in mint condition.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

At 121k miles the engine was professionally re-built to the spec of a 2.7-litre E30 Alpina, increasing the horsepower from the factory 172hp to approximately 210hp. The head was ported, polished, and fitted with a new sports camshaft. The engine was removed again during restoration and refurbished once more. Most ancillaries were new including the alternator, power steering pump, radiator, cooling system, engine sensors, and all gaskets of course. With the extra power, a taller LSD ratio of 3.46 was then fitted to ensure smoother and quieter motorway cruising. Lifting the bonnet now reveals a pristine engine bay. The engine upgrades are pleasingly subtle in appearance but offer a much livelier driving experience than a standard 325i.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 15-inch Ronal LS alloys look especially good with their deep polished rims and near-OEM styling. They are shod in a matching set of Continental tyres, each with ample tread remaining. Between the spokes you'll notice fully refurbished calipers all round, with drilled discs fitted at the front.

History File

This unrepeatable 325i Sport was supplied new by BMW Park Lane's Tourist & Diplomatic Sales Department in London. As an export car it was delivered with red outline number plates (still present) to show it was VAT-free. The car then resided in Germany and was owned by Wing Commander Holland who was an RAF Harrier pilot in the late eighties and early nineties.

The BMW changed hands only a few times before it was purchased in 2014 by the previous owner, a submarine engineering officer who devotedly restored it back to as-new condition. During this time the body shell was stripped back to bare metal and any areas showing signs of weakness were professionally repaired. Following that the entire shell was re-painted in the original colour of Dolphin Metallic; this included the exterior, interior, underside, engine bay, and boot compartment. The next two years were spent refurbishing or replacing every component during the rebuild. Seven batches of metal fittings were passivated in yellow zinc to ensure a factory finish and prolonged lifespan. Every nut and bolt used to rebuild the car was brand new and sourced directly from BMW.

The entire refresh cost in excess of £20k. The vast assortment of paperwork has filled two of our 4 Star history folders and includes an enormous stack of invoices, old MOT certificates, dyno readouts, period Blaupunkt documentation, the original BMW document holder with all booklets, 1987 BMW pricelist and model specification leaflets, a 1987 sales brochure, a January 2010 issue of Classic Car World (in which this car featured), and a selection of ownership documents from new. There are also over 300 photos documenting various stages of the car's restorative work.
