While the Chevelle was originally designed to provide solid, basic transportation, the secret was in the Chevrolet order form. With the right check marks and a few extra dollars, it was possible to order a car that would rule both street and strip. By 1970, GM had finally taken the corporate limitations restricting the size of engine they would allow to be stuffed into a mid-size body, and the result was a very special motor for the Chevelle SS. The Chevelle offered high performance with timeless good looks and remains a true collector favorite today.The ultimate Chevrolet motor that would be equipped was the 454 LS6 which was conservatively rated at 450 horsepower. The 454 cubic inch Chevy big-block featured an 800cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor on an aluminum manifold atop solid lifters, forged aluminum high compression pistons, rectangle port cylinder heads, four-bolt mains, forged steel crank and connecting rods, and deep-groove accessory pulleys. A $147 throttle-operated cowl induction hood ensured it never had to pant for air. Hi-test gasoline was mandatory with an 11.25:1 compression ratio, but the resulting performance in a 3,800 lb. car was pretty hi-test, too. The LS6 option added more than $1,000 to the base $3,800 price, but when the time came to step lively off the line it was worth every penny.This 1970 Chevelle SS was built at the Arlington Texas plant and sold new through Burt Chevrolet in Englewood, Colorado with the highly collectible and sought after LS6 454/450 hp engine option. Exterior is presented in the factory ordered Cortez Silver exterior with two black SS stripes that race up the functional cowl induction hood. The build sheet indicates that this Chevelle was well optioned. Options include; numbers matching LS6 454/450hp engine, numbers matching turbo 400 3-speed automatic transmission, F-41 performance suspension, functional cowl induction hood, vinyl top, console, power brakes, power steering and a 4.10:1 rear axle with posi-traction axle. This Chevelle SS has lead a very easy, well cared for life and looks like it did sitting on the showroom floor of Burt Chevrolet. Having spent majority of its life in dry south west, this low mileage LS6 Chevelle is a outstanding well preserved example. The paint is beautiful and has been wet sand and polished to a extremely high shine finish. The engine compartment has benefited from show quality detailing. The block was refinished in Chevy orange and the intake manifold in natural aluminum, while the inner fenders, firewall and radiator support wear a coat of satin black, all set off by fresh show-quality chrome on the rocker covers. There is a full complement of correct factory-style paint and crayon markings on the firewall, engine, master cylinder and steering box (among other places). Lifting this Chevelle on a hoist reveals a very original example complete with spot welds and pinch welds on lower quarters as well as rocker panels. Complete with red oxide floors as General Motors did at their Arlington Assembly plant. Complemented by inspection chalk marks, stickers and paint dobs. The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle LS6 was one of the greatest muscle cars of the period and is a must have for any serious GM collector. This one in particular is an investment grade collectible being powered by a numbers matching engine, numbers matching transmission and documented with a build sheet. Add to the fact that its is factory ordered in the highly desirable Cortez silver and this Chevelle LS6 is a magnificent example. Due to its rarity and condition, this LS6 Chevelle would be at home in any muscle car enthusiast’s collection.
