Chevrolet Corvette 350 cubic inch L82 V8 1978

So the Corvette guys weren’t so creative in the color naming department, calling the code 83L on this car “Corvette Dark Blue.” But regardless of the name, it’s quite attractive in person. It has been repainted once about 15 years ago, but there were no serious deviations from stock and the stripes on the hood were painted on so it has a very OEM look. The swoopy C3 bodywork looks especially good in dark colors where the many dramatic curves and lines can show at their best, and the bright shine on the paint only helps. It has never been wrecked and all the original emblems were reinstalled so it looks right. L82 badges on the hood advertise the upgraded V8 under the hood and you’ll note that there are some subtle “25th Anniversary” call-outs on the other emblems. This car also includes two sets of tops, clear and painted, giving you some choices in the look. For the price, this is a whole lot of Corvette.

The interior is called Oyster, and it’s an awesome choice with the dark blue paint. It isn’t quite gray but it isn’t beige, either, and that’s what makes it so cool. It’s almost completely original and still in good condition, with the only real issue being a small split on the driver’s outer seat bolster, which is common. The carpets are in excellent shape and the original door panels aren’t cracked or damaged. Options include A/C, power windows, a tilt steering column, automatic transmission, rear defrost, and an AM/FM/8-track stereo radio. Even better, it all works except the clock. And this car is so well-preserved even the original cargo cover is still in place. Nice!

Power comes from the original, numbers-matching L82 350 cubic inch V8, which was the top engine in the late ‘70s. 220 horsepower doesn’t seem like much today, but the punchy V8 makes this Corvette feel light on its feet and thanks to conscientious maintenance over the years, it runs superbly. A few chrome dress-up items and an open-element air cleaner give it an upgraded look, but there’s nothing seriously altered so it’s reliable and easy to service. With just 49,000 original miles, it has never needed anything but gas and oil, and it still starts easily, idles nicely, and has a great V8 soundtrack.

Underneath, you can see that this car has never spent any time in inclement weather and hasn’t been significantly modified—in fact, it still has its original catalytic converter. By 1978, Corvettes were using the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission, which feeds 3.08 gears out back, making it a fantastic highway cruiser that just eats up pavement. There’s a new cat-back exhaust system with chrome tips that look great, and the stance is just right. Factory machined aluminum wheels are some of the most attractive of the era and carry fat 225/70/15 white letter radials all around.

Documentation is extensive, including the original tank sticker, window sticker, manuals, service receipts and more.

Corvettes are a staple of the old car hobby and it’s easy to believe that the good ones are all priced out of reach. Guess again, because this one gets all the important stuff right, drives great, and costs less than a 4-year-old Hyundai. What are you waiting for, get into the game with an awesome Corvette!
