Muscle cars and hot rods aren't the only vehicles suitable for customization. The custom pickup truck scene is as strong as it ever was, and this 1964 Ford F1-100 pickup is as good as it gets.

This is “One Bad Ford', that the owner dreamt of when he was a 15-year-old kid even with out a driver's license. This creation was a dream come true. A hand me down from his father of this 64 F-100 that started its life as a railroad company pickup and was handed down as a present in 1974.

In 1977 the original six-cylinder was pulled out and then a 289ci Ford small block, had the F1-100 painted Midnight Blue and the truck started to look pretty good. The truck was driven for another 9 years until it was decided in 1987 to do a complete make over.

After totally stripping the truck apart with the help of friends, the chassis was first on the list. The original 9-inch was narrowed 15 inches and a Detroit Locker was installed with a 4.11:1 gear. The owner-built four link setup was also installed to hold everything in place, while Monroe shocks were added to smooth the ride. Completing the rear of the chassis, a Chassis Engineering wheelie bar setup was installed, as much for looks and keeping within the theme of the truck.

Moving to the front suspension, the original straight axle was dropped 4 inches by More Drop out of California and is held in place with the stock leaf springs. The stock spindles and brakes were retained with Monroe shocks finishing out the front. Center line wheels complete the who package, 15x7s up front with P225/75R15 tires and 15x15s out back wrapped in 33x19.50-15 rubber.

Under the hood of the F-100 is the real story. That is where a rare 427ci “side oiler' resides. This vintage '67 block now displaces 458ci due to the 428 crank. A machinist by trade, building this big block was a perfect task. The big crank has been deburred and knife-edged and is spinning a set of Childs & Albert's 13:1 pistons connected to Ford polished rods with Clevite bearings. A Crane roller camshaft, 296/306 duration and 595/62-lift, opens and closed the big valves in the ported polished C4 casting heads. A set of Jet-Hot coated Hedman headers rids all the spent gasses through, DynoMax mufflers and 3-1/2-inch madrel-bent aluminized exhaust. Topping off the potent Ford power plant is an Edelbrock intake with a 780CFM Holley carb all dressed up with Chrome. A top-loader-four speed, which is actuated by a Hurst vertical gate shifter, transfers the power to the rear.

The truck originally had a Fleetside bed and was replaced with a stepside and new bed sides were built to replace the old ones. Ford Fleetside wheel tubs were welded to the inside of the bed in order to accommodate the big rollers out back. After the cab, bed and fenders ware prepared it was time to apply the Midnight Blue basecoat and clearcoat. The new bed was built and finished off with chrome strips.

The Interior was redone, using the original seat, and was stitched up in cloth and vinyl material, dark blue with black inserts, while the carpet is a black loop. Everything else in the cab was painted blue and dressed out in chrome. The stock dash cluster was retained and filled with Stewart Warner gauges. A walnut steering wheel tops off the column and a Pioneer stereo finishes the dash.
