Nissan Skyline Skyline GT-R 1991

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History

The R32 GT-R was first produced in 1988 (including prototypes) and featured Nissan's twin-turbocharged RB26 engine. Compared with the standard R32 Skyline the GT-R had a significantly larger intercooler, larger brakes, aluminium front wings and an aluminium bonnet. Other distinguishing external features included flared front and rear wheel arches. More supportive bucket-style seats were fitted and the turbo boost gauge and digital clock were removed from inside the instrument cluster. The clock was replaced with a torque meter that indicated how much torque was being delivered to the front wheels (0%–50%), and the oil temp, voltage, and turbo boost gauges were fitted just above the air conditioning controls.

The R32 GT-R dominated the Japanese Touring Car Championship (JTCC), winning 29 races from 29 starts, taking the series title every year from 1989 to 1993. It took 50 races from 50 starts from 1991 to 1997 in the N1 Super Taikyu.

The R32 GT-R was introduced into the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1990 and promptly ended the reign of the previously all-conquering Ford Sierra Cosworth, winning Bathurst 1000 classic in 1991 and 1992. This success led to the Australian motoring press nicknaming the car Godzilla due to it being a “monster from Japan”. As Australia was the first export market for the car the name quickly spread. Such was the GT-R's dominance that it was a significant factor in the demise of Group A Touring Car racing, the formula being scrapped soon after. JTCC was similarly blighted by the R32 GT-R, and splintered soon after, leading to the switch to the Supertouring category and also indirectly to the GT500 category of today.

As of August 2014 the R32 Skyline GT-R is eligible for US import under the NHTSA 25-year rule, which allows vehicles 25 years or older to be imported into the States. Due to their age these vehicles do not have to comply with federal emissions or with Federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Equipment

Digital climate control air conditioning, Electric windows, Electrically-adjustable door mirrors, Three-spoke leather steering wheel, Nissan cassette radio with Active Speaker system, Battery voltage gauge, Oil temperature gauge, Boost gauge, Front torque gauge, Cigarette lighter, Ashtray, Original Skyline carpet mats, Spare wheel.

Exterior

The Gun Grey paintwork presents beautifully all round with a sharp metallic flake upon close inspection. There are very few stone chips to the front end and almost no blemishes to report aside one very minor graze low down on the offside sill, which could easily go unnoticed. Both sides are free from any unsightly dings and even the factory exhaust remains in place, maintaining the stock appearance. All badging, glass, seals, and lights still look great and the underside presents in excellent rust-free condition. The car was also professionally under-sealed upon arrival into the UK.

Interior

The purposeful cabin is everything you’d want from a ‘90s Japanese performance car. Free from any unnecessary decoration only the essentials are retained; supportive high-back seats, an ergonomic steering wheel, functional controls, and a series of gauges offering the driver plenty of feedback.

The centre console remains in lovely scratch-free condition and retains its original head unit. The gear knob and gaiters also appear fresh and the leather-trimmed GT-R steering wheel has worn extremely well showing few signs of age. Aside from some slightly off-colour areas there is no major wear to any of the seats, and the carpets are still protected in the footwells by original Skyline overmats. Passenger-side on the dash there is a small air bubble beneath the vinyl but there are no cracks or marks to be found anywhere else.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The R32 sports Nissan’s legendary RB26 engine, as used in every GT-R from 1989-2002. The twin-turbocharged powerplant was marketed as producing 276hp from the factory although realistically the figure was a little higher. This example remains in excellent mechanical condition and has been given a clean bill of health after inspection. The most recent service was carried out around 1k miles ago.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The original 16-inch alloys are still looking great in their factory finish having never been repainted. On very close inspection you will find a couple of light curb marks but we have left them un-refurbished to maintain originality. The wheels are shod in a matching set of tyres with plenty of tread remaining, and the correct Skyline centre caps are all present. Out on the road the brakes do a fine job of pulling the car to a halt quickly and in a straight line.

History File

The GT-R was first registered in September 1991. It landed in the UK in late 2015 and has seen just two keepers since then, the first being the specialist dealer who imported it. Following arrival the vehicle was serviced, MOT’d, registered, and under-sealed in preparation for UK road use. Despite covering less than 2k miles since that time another service has been carried out under the current ownership, and the MOT is valid until June 2019.
