Steel Build of the Classic Racer
Mercer was one of the most famous and romantic nameplates to grace the early American automobile scene. It was named after Mercer County, N.J., where its Trenton plant was located. The Mercer Raceabout and Stutz Bearcat epitomized the flamboyant spirit that prevailed before the United States entered the First World War in 1917.

Cars like the Mercer and Stutz were called sports cars. Along with simple clamshell fenders there was little more than a ‘doghouse' over the engine, two seats, a barrel of a fuel tank and a couple of spare tires strapped on the back.

The Mercer Automobile Co. was formed in 1909 by two rich families, the Roebling's and the Kuser's, names closely linked to the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The first Mercer model, the 1910 30-C Speedster, set the direction. It was a good looking, low-slung roaster designed by Mercer's engineer, C.G. Roebling. Although it was a good car, the Speedster soon found itself in the shadow of its glamorous new creation, the Mercer 35-R Raceabout introduced late in 1910.

The Raceabout became the most famous model to carry the Mercer name. It had a 4.9 litre (300 cu in.) T-head (intake valves on one side of the cylinders and exhausts on the other) four-cylinder engine. Power went through a multi-disc wet clutch and a three-speed manual transmission.

Mercers were driven by some of the day's racing greats like Ralph DePalma and Barney Oldfield.

Unfortunately, while Raceabouts were establishing the marque's reputation on the track, tragedy struck in the boardroom. Washington Roebling II, a principal of the company and the man who conceived the Raceabout, was lost when the ‘unsinkable' Titanic went down in 1912 in the North Atlantic. Although his loss was a serious blow to the company it was able to carry on.

During its life the Mercer had never been a mass-produced car, and probably no more than 500 were ever built in one year. Total production was in the order of 5,000, of which an estimated 100 have survived. Mercer has earned its place in automotive history as one the old American classics.
