Porsche 911 / 964 Carrera Sport Cabriolet 1989

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History

Instantly recognizable, the 911 design can be traced back the original sketches drawn by Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche in 1959. The first Porsche 911 was developed as a more powerful, larger, comfortable replacement for the company's first model, the Porsche 356. Originally named the Porsche 901 but quickly changed as Peugeot protested holding the exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. Porsche decided instead of selling the new model with an alternative name in France, they simply changed the name to 911. Since 1964 the 911 model proved to be a huge success, with models such as the Carrera RS, 911 Carrera 2.7, 911 SC and the 911 Turbo.
1984 saw the launch of the 911 Carrera 3.2, which was a replacement for the successful SC series. The 3.2 Carrera revived the Carrera name for the first time since 1977. It utilised a new higher-displacement 3.2-litre horizontally opposed flat-6 engine, which used higher domed pistons to increase the compression ratio from 9.8 to 10.3:1. It was also fitted with a new inlet manifold and exhaust system, Bosch Motronic management system and Bosch LE-Jetronic system. Stronger Hydraulic tensioners for the cam chains were also replaced. In 1987, the Carrera received a new five-speed G50 gearbox sourced from Getrag, with proven BorgWarner synchronizers. From October 1986, changes in the fuel map and chip re-programming further helped improve the power from 207 to 217hp.

Three Carrera models were available at the time – the Coupe, Targa, and Cabriolet. Almost identical in design to the earlier SC model, the Carrera received subtle cosmetic changes throughout its lifespan. Some of the more noticeable changes were the integrated front fog lights and redesigned dashboard featuring larger air conditioning vents.

Equipment

UK specification (C16), Guards Red paintwork, Black leather upholstery, 8-way electric front seats, 5-speed manual G50 gearbox, Sport Equipment: 16-inch forged Fuchs alloy wheels, Front and rear spoilers, Sports shock absorbers; Electric folding soft-top in black, Recoil bumpers front and rear, High Fidelity Package including 8 speaker system with amplifier, Velour luggage compartment carpet, Spare wheel, Tool kit, Spare key.

Exterior

The Guards Red paintwork presents extremely well and has a deep lustful shine after a full session with our in-house detailer. All of the plastic trims and rubber seals remain in excellent condition with no signs of perishing or fading, and the light lenses are clear of any moisture or chips. There are only a few minor blemishes to report such as some light frontal stone chips and a couple of discreet paint imperfections including one small blister low down on driver’s side front wing. The power hood works as it should and the condition of the canvas and rear screen are excellent. On the last inspection it was noted that the underside of the car was very good and free from any corrosion or previous repairs.

Interior

The interior presents very nicely with minimal wear to the leather seats. The original carpets remain in excellent shape and have been protected with an additional set of overmats. The dashboard and switchgear are also in fine order, the only imperfection being a couple of marks between the top of the steering wheel and dashboard edge. The door cards are immaculate and the steering wheel retains a nice textured finish. The luggage compartment is also very tidy and still contains the spare wheel and tool kit.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Reading through the history file it’s clear that this example has been maintained to an excellent standard throughout its life with no gaps in the paperwork. The 911 has just returned from a fresh service and inspection and now has a clean bill of health. It was noted that the engine is running in fine fettle, pulling strongly, and is free from any of the normal oil leaks commonly associated with these models. Being a G50 the gear change is excellent and it's a real joy to drive.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The forged Fuchs wheels remain in great condition and are still in their factory finish with the original valve stem supports; understandably there are a couple of light age-related marks to the edges of the rear rim but nothing that that detracts from the overall appearance. All of the tyres have plenty of tread remaining, and the brakes were inspected at the last service and are still in good working condition.

History File

This example comes with a very comprehensive history file boasting 33 stamps in the original book; the last service and inspection were carried out in January 2022 at 125,613 miles. There is also a file full of invoices for service work and parts fitted to the car along with most of the old MOT certificates and some old tax discs. The paperwork for the Cobra alarm is also included along with the spare keys and a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche.
