BMW 325 325i Touring 1989

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

Brought to the market as an entry-level luxury car, the E30 3-Series spanned twelve years of production. It replaced the E21 chassis in 1982 and was succeeded by the E36 in 1990, although production did overlap by four years.

Early models featured the four-pot M10 and straight-six M20 engines of the E21. The major update for the E30 took place in 1987 where the M20 engine was fitted with Bosch Motronic injection and the M10 was replaced with the M40 engine, again utilising Motronic. The chrome bumpers were also replaced with black or coloured ones in late ’89, with the rear light clusters made slightly bigger during this minor facelift. E30s are now often referred to as either pre-facelift (with chrome bumpers) or facelift (with plastic bumpers).

Despite its solid construction the E30 boasted a spacious cabin and a light curb weight. This was due to the suspension design that utilised Macpherson front struts and rear semi-trailing arms. It was also the first three series to receive a service light indicator and warning light.

Exterior

This rare and desirable 325i Touring looks particularly sharp in Alpine White, the paintwork contrasting beautifully against the shadowline trim, rubbing strips, and bumpers. The bodywork presents to a good standard with only a number of small blemishes to report on close inspection. There is no corrosion in any of the common E30 weak spots such as the arches or scuttle panel, and all of the black trims have cleaned up a treat, with no signs of any fading or scuffs. Pleasingly the supplying dealer number plates are still present with the car, as is the original ‘Jacksons Garage’ rear window sticker.

Interior

The seats are upholstered in hardwearing anthracite cloth that’s still remarkably fresh throughout. The front seats appear almost entirely unworn and there are only one or two small marks to be found on the rear bench. Finer details, such as the M-Technic leather steering wheel, remain in excellent original condition. The switchgear is all fully operational, and the dash has only one very small crack to note. In the boot you’ll a large, tidy space with the retractable load cover still present and correct.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay of this example appears nice and original, not immaculately presented but perfectly in keeping with a car of this vintage. Much of the original factory sealant is still present and there is no structural corrosion to be found in any of the usual areas. The engine fires into life first turn of the key and idles up to temperature without fuss. The five-speed auto ‘box is a perfect complement to silky 2.5-litre straight six.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 325i sits on desirable 15-inch cross-spoke alloys wrapped in a matching set of premium Continental tyres. The wheels are in amazing condition throughout, the BMW centre emblems also looking nice and fresh. The brakes were treated to new discs and pads all round only a few hundred miles ago, at which point the calipers were also refreshed.

History File

The E30 was first registered in Jersey in July 1989. There are ten stamps in the original service booklet, including the running-in inspection carried out by the supplying dealer at 1,237 miles. The History File is complete with the original BMW document pouch and owner's manuals. Since arriving at 4 Star the car has been fully inspected and freshly MOT'd for the new keeper's peace of mind.
