Buick Regal 4.1 liter turbocharged V6 1986

Allmän beskrivning : 26,859 original miles. Built 4.1-liter stroker motor, big turbo, upgraded intercooler, heavy-duty transmission, custom engine management system. Fully sorted and tuned, 600+ horsepower yet docile as a stocker. The T-Type that lives up to the hype!

Turbo Buicks are red hot right now. Part of it is nostalgia, which drives a lot of the hobby. But part of it is simple performance, and for the 1980s there was simply nothing nastier than a big, bad, blown Buick. In today’s world of 600+ horsepower production cars, the stock T-Type might seem a little, well, staid. So if you’re the sort of person who is looking for a car that more than lives up to the legend, this spectacular 1986 Buick T-Type delivers in a big way. They started with an ultra-clean two-owner Regal T-Type with just 26,859 original miles. That means no winters, no daily drives, just a well-maintained car that had always been treated as a collector’s item. While you could technically get other colors on your Regal T-Type, basic black is really the one you want. It’s formal and sinister, the best possible choice for a car that swings such a big hammer. It carries blacked-out bumpers and trim like a Grand National, and the bulging hood dome reminds everyone about the big turbocharger living underneath. This car wears 100% original paint which is in very good condition, with just some minor checking on the horizontal surfaces—probably inevitable after 35 years. It’s glossy and bright and someone has obviously cared for this car from the very beginning. Even the weather seals and soft parts are in excellent condition with no UV damage. It certainly looks like the badass that it is.

Inside, the T-Type was available with all the Regal’s luxury parts, and fortunately this one got the optional bucket seats and console. Gray cloth is light and airy and a good choice for a car with T-tops since you’ll be spending some time out in the sun. With just over 26,000 original miles, the seats remain firm and all the soft parts are 100% original, including the dash pad. All the luxury features are here, including working factory A/C, power windows, tilt steering column, rear defrost, and a decent AM/FM/cassette stereo. The T-Type did get a little bar graph style tach and boost gauge stuck in the corner of the instrument panel as an afterthought, as well as oil pressure and temperature gauges down on the console, but given the investment in the hardware up front and the performance that it delivers, there are some notable upgrades. First, there’s a fuel pressure gauge out on the cowl, which is the only safe place to put it. There’s also a monster tach with memory, a real boost gauge, and an air/fuel ratio gauge that helps you keep an eye on the health of the turbocharger. It’s worth noting that nothing was cut or drilled, so all the gauges can be removed in a few minutes without any damage. The T-tops are in excellent condition and the trunk is unmarked with the original space-saver spare that’s never been used.

Where things start to get interesting is when you pop the hood. The original 3.8 liter V6 was punched out to 4.1 liters using a Full Throttle stroker kit. That means a steel crank and rods, Diamond forged aluminum pistons, and a custom set of billet steel main bearing caps for strength. The block was bored .010 oversize and the entire rotating assembly was balanced. A custom billet camshaft with Harland-Sharp roller rockers handles the valve duties while custom stainless headers manage the exhaust. On the induction side, there’s a bigger Precision 6766 turbocharger, a set of Champion Racing ported and polished cylinders heads and matching intake, and a set of Precision 83 lb.-hr. injectors. Out front, a massive RJC intercooler and aluminum radiator control temperatures and it’s all managed by a custom Fast XFI engine management system. It’s currently configured to put out 22 pounds of boost and an estimated 650 horsepower and 700 lb.-ft. of torque, capable of running low 10-second times at the strip, maybe even 9s if you’re really good. It’s running race fuel, but the system can be reconfigured for 15 pounds of boost so it will run on pump gas. And shockingly enough, it starts easily, idles BETTER than a stocker, and drives beautifully without any indications that there’s a mountain of motor living under the hood. That’s some impressive tuning!

Don’t worry, the rest of the driveline has been beefed up to handle the power. There’s a custom-built Stage 2 2004R 4-speed automatic transmission by Janis Transmission and featuring a 2500 RPM stall torque converter, so it has good manners on the street. An aluminum driveshaft with safety loop links it to a set of 3.42 gears on an Eaton Tru-Trac limited slip and spinning Moser 30-spline axles. The entire rear end housing was powderocated and fitted with a custom end cover with bearing cap supports. A 3-inch downpipe joins a full 2.5-inch stainless steel exhaust system and the soundtrack is pure turbo Buick—distinctive without ever getting annoying. There’s also a fresh set of Moog bushings in the front suspension and an upgraded H&R Stuff rear sway bar, as well as a fresh set of shocks. The wheels might look familiar, but they’re billet aluminum versions of the Grand National steelies wearing 215/65/15 front and 235/60/15 rear BFGoodrich radials.

Original owner’s manuals, receipts, and other paperwork are included.

This is the turbo Buick that lives up to the legend. Beautifully built using only top-of-the-line components, it still drives like a stocker. But dip into the boost and it’s a totally different animal and you’d better be sure you’re pointed in the right direction when things start to happen. Seriously fast, nicely preserved, and ready to rock, this is the T-Type that delivers on all the promises made by the nasty black bodywork. Call today!
