This Corvair's exterior is still clad in the same Ember red shade it debuted with more than a half century ago, and in its present day, refreshed state, it's a definite winner - offering a nice shine and plenty of vitality. There's plenty of mid-'60s style on display here - up front, the twin dual headlights sit against black surroundings that contrast nicely with the red of the exterior and are visually tied together by a black stripe bearing the Chevy bowtie in a triangle-shaped emblem. In back, the ridged ventilation on the hood and venting below lets you know that this is no ordinary classic cruiser you're viewing. Its revolutionary design prompted Motor Trend to name it Car of the Year when it was first introduced and it greets the present in good shape, complete with clean chrome trim and bumpers and clear cabin glass.
The black interior has been refurbished while retaining a great factory look. The pair of low backed buckets sport fresh vinyl covers that mirror the pattern Chevy used when this car was new and appear to be as lightly trafficked as they are well-fitted - this upholstery job was really done well. Fresh black carpeting spans the floor, punctuated with red-accented floormats that offer a nice finishing detail. The dash area also has a stock look to it, while a number of the components it carries appear to have been either very skillfully restored or replaced altogether - the instrument cluster features a crystal clear lens, all the control knobs have a very fresh appearance and the dash pad running the width of the cabin is still supple and shiny - a welcome sight with UV-sensitive black upholstery. A retro-style AM/FM radio sits at the center, also offering iPod connectivity to broaden your audio horizons. The front trunk area is surprisingly spacious - even with a full size spare sitting inside.
This unique classic holds plenty of curb appeal while at a standstill and is sure to draw plenty of attention, but its level of road readiness makes it a lot of fun to drive. Mechanically-speaking, everything is very much in sync and functioning as intended, starting with the 164 cubic inch 6-cylinder engine sitting at the center of its very clean, stock looking rear engine compartment. Inside, every wire is neatly routed and the surrounding inner fenders and firewall have a scrubbed clean appearance. The engine teams with a 4-speed manual transmission to provide a rewarding vintage driving experience - this is very much a car you can enjoy just as soon as you get it home. It's a definite head turner on its 13" stock wheels that are outfitted with Milestar tires whose thin whitewall stripes further add to the vintage vibe. The undercarriage appears reassuringly solid.
