Chevrolet Monte Carlo 3.4 liter DOHC V6 1995

Allmän beskrivning : 1110 original miles (not a typo). As-new in every way, first-year Brickyard 400 pace car, serial number 008 of 400 built. Beautifully preserved, properly maintained, and 100% stock right down to the tires. An interesting pace car in like-new condition.

1994 was the first-ever Brickyard 400 NASCAR race, and Chevy put a hurry-up on the all-new Monte Carlo to be able to provide the pace car for this momentous event. Sure, NASCAR had run at Indy before, but with the Brickyard 400, it became an official event in one of racing’s most hallowed temples of speed. For public consumption, an appropriate 400 copies of the Pace Car were built, all of them in Z34 trim featuring GM’s 3.4-liter DOHC V6 and handsome 2-door coupe bodywork. Technically, the pace cars were all 1995 models even though they paced the 1994 race, and with just 1110 original miles, this one is pretty much a new car. It is serial number 008, one of the earliest cars sold to the public, and has been preserved in as-new condition for the past 25 years (has it been that long already?). All pace cars were white with purple and gold stripes, done in GM’s familiar waving flag motif first seen on the 1993 Camaro pace car and later used on the 1998 Corvette pace car. The graphics are bright and crisp, the paint is virtually unmarked, and all the glass, lenses, emblems, and weather seals are like new. That’s pretty much the highest praise we can give a car like this—it looks like it did sitting on the showroom floor in 1995.

Tan leather was the only choice in the pace cars, and when you open the door on this coupe it literally still smells new. Yes, I know a lot of people make that claim facetiously, but this one really does have that new car smell. The seats are unmarked with headrests that are still wrapped in factory plastic, and the embroidery commemorates the first running of the Brickyard 400. The only way they came was fully loaded, so you get A/C, cruise control, power windows, locks, mirrors, and seat, a full set of gauges (check out the 7000 RPM redline on the tach!), and a familiar GM/Delco AM/FM/cassette stereo. A band of somewhat convincing burled walnut trim runs through the center of the dash and there’s a special plaque on the passenger’s side highlighting this car’s 008 serial number. As with the exterior, there’s no wear, no damage, no issues, and we’re pretty sure nobody’s ever been in the back seat. There’s also a good-sized trunk with a space-saver spare that’s never been used.

GM was pretty excited about the all-new 3.4-liter DOHC V6 used in the Monte Carlo and other models. It was state-of-the-art for 1995, proof that GM was serious about competing with the imports from Japan. Horsepower was a fairly impressive 210 (recall that the wheezy 3.1-liter engine it replaced only made 160) and it was happy to zing to the upper reaches of the power curve without strain. It’s a great choice for a pace car, delivering performance that made the Monte Carlo entertaining to drive. This one has been maintained with periodic fluid replacements and other required maintenance for long-term storage, and the battery has been replaced, but otherwise it is 100% stock under the hood. The only transmission you could get was a 4-speed automatic feeding the front wheels, but in normal use it’s quick-witted and has a tall overdrive gear that makes the Monte Carlo rather thrifty as well. The suspension is clearly tuned for comfort more than performance, but it’s capable and agile enough to make you smile in the curves. You’ll note that the undercarriage of this car is sparkling clean and pretty much untouched—all the factory decals and assembly markings are intact and the floors show that the car has not even seen rain, let alone anything more serious. Even the factory exhaust system is like new. Painted 16-inch aluminum wheels are unmarked and carry fresh 225/60/16 Goodyear radials all around.

This pace car also includes a ton of extras, including owner’s manuals, build sheet, and a cache of inaugural Brickyard 400 merchandise and memorabilia.

We love incredible low-mileage cars like this—they unquestionably deliver the new car experience decades after the fact. And when they’re special models like a pace car, it becomes a double bonus, with preservation and history meeting in one package. Fun to drive and a great piece of memorabilia for both Chevy and NASCAR fans alike, this Monte Carlo represents a lot of bang for a pretty small pile of bucks. Call today!

Överraskande, "Amerikas enda sportbil" Corvette infördes i Chevrolet varumärke snarare än sina egna.
