Ford Mustang 289 cubic inch V8 1965

Allmän beskrivning : Everyone loves old Mustangs. Nobody’s looking at the engine under the hood or the condition of the undercarriage, they’re just looking at the person behind the wheel and wishing they could trade places. When it was new, Lee Iacocca pitched the Mustang as the essence of freedom and the open road, and that allure still clings to the Mustang today. It’s impossible not to smile when you see one going down the road and putting one in your garage is shockingly easy and affordable. There are more expensive Mustangs than this 1965 coupe, but this one delivers the same fun as any of its pricier siblings. That’s what the Mustang is all about.

Experts will glance at the serial number and quickly realize that this Mustang started life with a T-code 200 cubic inch 6-cylinder under the hood, but that’s irrelevant today. Thanks to a lot of recent work, including paint and a freshened 302 cubic inch V8, it’s a flashy driver that delivers the true Mustang experience loud and clear. There’s a newer coat of Rangoon Red paint that is the ideal color on a Mustang, particularly a coupe, a neat blend of traditional and sporting. There’s a reason most of the Mustangs in the ads were red. It’s not perfect and there are a few minor prep issues that keep it from being show-quality, but it has a nice shine that looks awesome going down the road or with a casual glance at the local cruise night. If there was any rust, it has been neatly exorcised and doesn’t show, and panel alignment is pretty good except the trunk, which is always problematic on these cars. Correct emblems have been installed, including the ‘289’ badges on the front fenders that advertise the V8 under the hood (even though this one is a bit beefier) and the unique 1965 cross-hair grille gives it a slightly aggressive look. Nice chrome bumpers glitter against the red paint and someone has added a GT-style rear valence with the trumpet-style exhaust tips poking through.

The black standard vinyl interior is surprisingly stylish for being “standard” issue. Comfortable bucket seats wear newer seat covers and matching door panels are surprisingly dressy for the bargain-priced Mustang. All 1965 Mustangs received the same wide instrument panel with the speedometer in the center flanked by the fuel gauge on the left and temperature gauge on the right. The deep-dish wheel has a leather wrap that makes the skinny plastic rim feel a little more substantial in your hands and the rest is simple and to the point: AM radio in the center, basic heater controls, and a T-handle for the automatic transmission between the seats. New carpets, a taut headliner, and fresh seat belts (Mustangs were the first cars with seat belts as standard equipment) make it ready to enjoy. The back seat is spacious enough for adults on short trips, so it’s a practical little car, and the good-sized trunk features a new plaid mat.

OK, the T-code six is gone and the ‘289’ emblems aren’t telling the whole story. The great thing about the Windsor family of V8s is that they all pretty much interchange, so there’s a later 302 cubic inch V8 living under the hood today. Rebuilt with a mild cam, it’s a great runner, particularly with those two Holley double-pumpers on top. It looks a little radical, but it’s actually quite docile, starting easily, idling nicely, and pulling the lightweight coupe around with real authority. I mean, make sure this sucker is pointed where you want it to go before you mash the pedal. It’s also neatly finished with Ford Blue engine enamel, a set of late-model 5.0 Mustang aluminum valve covers, bright blue ignition parts, and those cool little chrome air cleaners on top. It looks well-dressed, but not over-the-top, and offers a nice little surprise for the folks who want to peek under the hood (and for guys on the street, too!). Other goodies include an aluminum water pump, dual master cylinder, and an electric fuel pump to feed both carbs. Vintage-style “Tri-Y” headers feed a rumbling dual exhaust system that can’t quite disguise the fact that there’s a late-model 5.0 under the hood.

Underneath there’s a snappy C4 3-speed automatic transmission feeding an 8-inch rear end with 3.00 gears inside, making it a comfortable highway cruiser. It also features all-new floors to eliminate the Mustang’s most common issue plus a fat front sway bar that helps keep the V8 on an even keel. The factory brakes offer a firm pedal and plenty of stopping power for the Mustang’s modest curb weight and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by just how well a vintage Mustang rides—surprisingly plush! A new gas tank hangs out back and it sits on traditional Mustang steel wheels with spinner hubcaps along with 195/75/14 whitewall radials with only a few hundred miles on them.

If you haven’t owned a vintage Mustang, maybe it’s time. They’re still as fun as the ads said they were, and it should be no surprise why they sold more than a million of them in the first eight months. Today they occupy a special place in collectors’ hearts, and everywhere you go in this bright red coupe, you’ll be a celebrity. That’s the magic of the Mustang. Call today!
