Lotus Elan SE Turbo 1992

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The Lotus Elan M100, launched in 1989, was a two-seater convertible sports car designed by Peter Stevens and produced by Lotus whilst under the ownership of General Motors.

The M100-series Elan represented the light at the end of a very long tunnel for its maker. Lotus had been developing a small car to slot in under the Excel and Esprit since the early-1980s and had to endure a number of abandoned projects before it arrived at the final 1989 car. For many enthusiasts, the M100 was a complete shock, not least because it was front-wheel drive, a format that had not really proved itself in the sports car market beyond a generation of hot hatchbacks. It was a leap into the unknown for both buyers and its maker.

But once road testers got their hands of the Elan, and the scale of its dynamic prowess became apparent, you could hear the collective sighs of relief. Almost all the production cars ended up being turbocharged SE versions, though some 130hp non-turbo models were sold. All were powered by a durable Isuzu 1.6-litre engine, which Lotus had helped to design. The M100 Elan’s cornering performance was undeniable. On release the Elan was described by Autocar magazine as the quickest point-to-point car available. It has made its mark in history as arguably the finest handling front wheel drive car ever made.

Exterior

Finished in the beautiful shade of Pacific Blue this super low mileage M100 Elan looks marvelous against our studio backdrop. The glossy metallic paintwork is exceptionally well presented and even on close scrutiny the fiberglass panels remain straight and true throughout. There are very few stone chips to report at the front end and the black mohair soft-top is also pristine with no sun damage or wear to the rear window. The pop-up headlights operate exactly as they should and the rear lights are without any signs of moisture ingress.

Interior

With the low seating position and optional striped grey leather the interior of this Elan is a great place to be. The upholstery across both seats has worn well with only some expected creasing on the driver’s bolster worthy of note. Looking closer there are no rips or stains to be found, with other commonly worn items such as the steering wheel, gear knob, and switchgear all in equally fine condition. There is no marking across the top of the dash, and in the footwells the grey carpets are particularly clean and tidy.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Despite having driven only 19k miles – and unlike many other low mileage vehicles with limited history to warrant the mileage – this lovely turbocharged Elan is accompanied by an excellent maintenance record with 16 services having been carried out since new. Reading through the paperwork it’s clear that the car has always been maintained to a high standard with the majority of services having been carried out by either Lotus or Lotus specialist workshops.

Lifting the bonnet reveals a nicely presented engine bay, not overly dressed but in excellent original condition with no signs of any damage or previous poor repair. The last service was only recently carried out in October 2022 at 19,289 miles; this work was carried out by marque specialists Back On Track in Guildford.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Elan sits on its original 15-inch OZ alloy wheels, all in perfect unmarked condition. They are shod in a matching set of Kumho tyres all with at least 6mm of tread left. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, bringing the car to a halt quickly and in a straight line.

History File

A surely unrepeatable example with only 19k miles under its belt, this lovely Elan was supplied new by Mann Egerton & Co. Ltd. in April 1992. It has now seen only 4 registered keepers, the current since 2015. Within the accompanying History File the lucky new owner will be presented with the original Lotus owner’s handbook, a thick raft of invoices, old MOT certificates, tax discs, and an Elan sales brochure – even the original vehicle handover checklist from the day of first delivery is still present.

The car has been well maintained since new, which is evident not only from its outstanding original condition but also from the paperwork. The service book is fully stamped at close mileage intervals, as detailed below. During the late 90s/early 00s the first owner moved abroad and so the car was professionally stored in a de-humidified facility to help preserve its amazing condition. There are plenty of invoices and correspondence within the paperwork that show the vehicle to have been regularly checked over while in storage, and pleasingly the mileage is also well documented during this time.

The car originally was sold by us around 10 years ago and it’s just as nice as we remember. It’s great to see that the owners have really kept on top of the maintenance despite so few miles being covered during their custodianship.
