Renault 5 GT Turbo 1990

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

Hot hatches are amongst the best things to come out of the 80s, and one of the greatest was the Renault 5 GT Turbo. Launched in the UK in 1986 the model remained largely unchanged until 1991. With sporting heritage from Alpine and Gordini, the GT Turbo was always going to be a good driver’s car but few were prepared for the little Renault's scorching performance.

Using turbo technology derived from the original 5 Turbo, Renault's new GT turbo had the same 1397cc Inline 4, carbureted by a single Solex blown through by a Garrett T2 turbocharger. The engine developed 118hp at 5750rpm and there was a very usable 121lb ft of torque at 3000rpm. All this power and a body that only weighed only 830kg gave it a blistering 0-60mph time of 7.3 secs and the quarter mile in an impressive 15.8 secs.

Renault's engineers took care to make sure the car handled as well as it went. Negative offset front suspension was complemented by trailing arm/transverse torsion bar rear suspension. Power was delivered to the road through a 5-speed gearbox and braking was all round servo-assisted discs. Sharp rack-and-pinion steering completed the cocktail that was universally praised and christened “The Pocket Rocket”.

Equipment

Black paintwork, Sports seats in Sports cloth upholstery, Body-coloured bumpers and grille, Bodyside stripes, Wheel arch extensions, 13-inch light alloy wheels, Front fog lamps, 5-speed manual gearbox, Leather-covered steering wheel and gear knob, Water temperature and oil level gauges, Turbo pressure gauge, Digital clock, Glass tilting sunroof, Central locking, Immobiliser, Renault mats, Indoor car cover, Spare keys.

Exterior

Finished in gleaming black this 31-year-old pocket rocket looks magnificent against our studio backdrop. High quality GT Turbos are increasingly scarce, and so to find an exceptional unmolested example such as this is a real treat. Having been sympathetically restored in the mid-2000s by the current owner (of 16 years) the car presents impeccably. But unlike many older restorations that begin to show their age after a few years this one remains absolutely spot-on. The paintwork was carried out to a very high standard and only genuine parts were used when putting everything back together, including the side stripes that were sourced directly from Renault. The car was also treated to a brand new grille, sunroof, and seals all round. It was also waxoyled inside the doors and under the body kit to help preserve its amazing condition. Dry stored in a heated garage for the last 16 years this cossetted example is not to be missed.

Interior

The interior presents in incredible timewarp condition, with everything looking and working exactly as it should. The delicate sports seats retain their original cloth, all in amazing order having never required a re-trim. The same can be said for the spotless carpets, door cards, and parcel shelf; even the factory cassette radio remains in place. Other commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and gear knob also present really well, and the switchgear operates without fault; the electric windows don’t drag, the heater fan is smooth and quiet, and the central locking sill works perfectly. In the footwells you’ll find original Renault overmats.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The turbocharged 1.4 is as spritely as ever having always been correctly maintained at close mileage intervals. The engine has never required any rebuild work and still performs remarkably well. Despite covering very few miles over the last 16 years the car has been exercised regularly, MOT’d annually, and serviced as necessary. The original maintenance booklet is stamped 22 times, the last service having been carried out in September 2020 at 85,894 miles. Since arriving with us the car has been fully inspected by our trusted classic car specialists for the new keeper’s peace of mind. It’s bone-dry underneath, and the advisory-free MOT is valid until August 2022.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The GT Turbo sits on its original 13-inch alloys, all in perfect condition having previously been fully refurbished to a very high standard. They are shod in a matching set of Uniroyal tyres in the correct 195 size with plenty of tread left. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, stopping the car quickly and in a straight line.

History File

This surely unrepeatable example was first registered in March 1990. It has now driven just 85k miles in the hands of only 3 keepers from new. The first owner, Mr Webster, worked for an advertising agency whose main client was Renault UK, and so he thought he ought to drive the marque. 9 years later he passed the car on to his daughter. In 2005 it was then purchased by the current owner who, with the intention of keeping it forever, set out to return the car to its former glory – and he definitely succeeded in that.

The accompanying paperwork is extensive and dates right back to when the car was new, fully verifying its low mileage. Every single MOT certificate since 1997 is on file, as is the original Renault document pack with the service booklet and owner’s manuals still inside. Spare keys, an original sales brochure, a thick raft of invoices and various ownership documents complete the History File.

The service booklet is fully stamped with the following entries:

Sedan kom Renault Espace 1984.
