In 1978, the Lariat package was created to showcase an upgraded and very stylish pickup. That's why you're looking at an impressive full trim package, wide chrome bumpers, and square headlights (lower models had the round ones in '78.) The original silver paint has been swapped for slick black. But as good as a black and chrome package looks, you can tell this one is really is ready to get down to work and play. The bed has a full liner so you can easily handle your weekend chores. We know you're already checked out the lifted suspension and 15-inch alloy wheels that are just begging to go beyond where the pavement ends. Plus, there's even a trailer hitch, so your adventure can include the camper, boat, or whatever else you want to do that weekend.
Inside is more of the full black package that consists of carpeting, door panels, and upgraded bench seat. And because this is premium pickup, there is a nice addition of wood paneling on the dash to warm up this atmosphere. You get some nice features like an AM/FM/cassette stereo, aftermarket gauge trio, and provisions for air conditioning. But in a truck like this, your favorite feature will just be opening up the vent side windows and letting the breeze flow through the split rear glass. This also gets you closer to the wonderful growl of the V8.
This is a big truck, but fortunately, there's a big V8 to move it around. The 460 cubic-inch engine was the largest motor Ford ever put in this generation F-series. This biggest of the big blocks inhales deeply though a four-barrel carburetor, and it exhales with serious authority out of the glasspack-style dual exhaust. The motor fires up with confidence and runs like a dependable truck should. The two-speed transfer case is great for 4x4 duty, and the Wild Spirit Sport H/T tires are great for the highway or the trail. So soon you realize this is a great package for on or off road. This is also true of features like Ford's three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and front disc brakes.
