AMC has always offered distinctive cars with lower production figures than The Big Three. That's what makes this 1977 AMC Hornet AMX is so intriguing. A rare car from an already lower volume manufacturer that's been so well restored and preserved is absolutely worth plenty of attention... and that's even before you sampled its V8 power.
1977 was the last year for the Hornet and the first year for the AMX package, so this is a one-year only vehicle. In fact, these were such a specialty machine, they were finished at a specialty shop instead of the standard Kenosha production line. So having it in Firecracker Red is a great way to draw attention to this unique AMX. It's a quality respray of the factory-correct color that has the right amount of shine to highlight all the lines of this curvy hatchback. Plus, we love the way the bold red covers the bumpers, body kit, and rear window slats to give these classic lines a modern feeling. And the blacked-out grille, black rear panel, black trim, and correct side decals give this a mean appearance that's worthy of the legendary AMX name.
Inside is a factory-correct black interior that has all the right elements you'd expect from a classic performance machine. Bucket seats and a center console make it instantly inviting. And when you grab the correct AMC three-spoke sports steering wheel, you get a commanding view of the full gauge pack that includes a large tach. AMC's 304 cubic-inch V8 is always was great to see under the hood, especially when it's original to the car like this one. In fact, that gives this one true rarity, with only around 2,000 (or less) Hornet AMXs ever equipped with the optional V8. Because this is special, there has been great care with the motor. It has a newer radiator, freeze plugs, starter, alternator, belts, hoses, and all the other right maintenance you'd do yourself, too. But more than just good care, it has also been upgraded for extra power with an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor and Edelbrock intake. That means more performance on the streets and an extra hint of growl from the dual exhaust. Plus, these AMX specialty vehicles were given an upgraded handling package. Add in the three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and front disc brakes, and you'll love cruising this AMC everywhere.
Complete with all the right documents, including the factory buildsheet, multiple owner's manuals, and maintenance records, you're looking at a well presented and cherished classic that will be unique in any crowd.
