Cars handcrafted by the handfuls and assembled only for the lucky few are always part of an upper-class dream. So the obtainable price on this 1958 Bentley S1 Saloon already has you interested. And this one retains that true classic style where your nostalgia can also revel in vintage rolling opulence.
We don't have to tell you about this car's elegance and opulence. The flying B on the hood is like an announcement to an unyielding commitment to the best of everything. These were graceful cars that knew how to let the design fully develop so that a line that starts at the headlight, and it runs uninterruptedly until it meets the sporty arc at the rear door. Brightwork is carefully crafted, and you see that in the curves of the bumper guards, intricate taillight arrangement, and the hallmark waterfall grille. What makes this a true upper-class classic is the detail work. It's in the way the wheels include this color theme, and the trim design below the windows conceal the door handles. The car's sliver and charcoal gray paint represent true understated British elegance. The car was concurs judged in 1981, and it was restored not too long thereafter. Since this has been in the same family for the last 40 years, it has not been extensively reconditioned since its initial restoration. So it has the correct look that most people will believe is factory. So you can take the value price and invest in a fresher restoration. But we also won't stop you from making up a story about an oil baron, his mistress, and a 40-year-old mystery, because this one really does already have that well-aged look that could tell a tale.
Bentleys always have a sporting elegance, and the red interior sets that tone perfectly. The supple leather seats, nice carpeting, and complete door panels are truly vintage and retain the quality that makes these cars legendary. And the real walnut wood that dominates the dash and flows onto the door panels gives this a true warmth. There are nice features like a well-integrated AM/FM stereo and this was a done with air conditioning (will need a R134a changeover and service to blow cold.) The rear is just as elegantly appointed, because after all, the owner is not necessarily the driver in a car of this caliber. There are even fold-down tray tables so you can re-create the Grey Poupon commercial.
Straight-six motors have had a long history at Rolls-Royce and Bentley, and so for purists, the S1 represented the last of a grand tradition. So it's great to have such a period-correct powerhouse under the hood. It has the has the right look of authenticity, right down to the twin SU carburetors. Because this is from long-term ownership, the motor fires up easily like a well-respected family member. It has the smooth nature and immediate power that enriched the Bentley reputation. And you even have power steering, a four-speed automatic transmission, and a supple ride for true opulent comfort.
