To arrange financing and facilities, Bricklin looked north to New Brunswick. He convinced government officials that manufacturing cars could alleviate New Brunswick’s unemployment, which was particularly high in the winter. The provincial government bankrolled the operation, and plants were set up in St. John (for assembly) and Minto (for body panel construction).
Built in New Brunswick beginning in 1974, the project was a massive financial failure but there’s something undeniably cool about the Bricklin’s exotic-looking and often brightly colored fiberglass/acrylic bodywork and its forward-thinking safety features. Known primarily for its unmistakable gullwing doors, Bricklin’s design philosophy emphasized safety (SV-1 stands for “Safety Vehicle One”). A steel-tube perimeter frame surrounded the passenger compartment along with an integrated roll cage. Large impact bumpers protected the nose and tail. Bodywork was fiberglass with a thin layer of acrylic on the outside, and the doors opened via power hydraulic system.
Production costs caused prices to soar to nearly $10,000 by the end of production and they were also built more slowly than expected, with a planned 1,000 cars per month dwindling to less than 3,000 cars in under three years. By 1976, the company had gone into receivership after receiving more than $20 million from New Brunswick government.
The original owner of this SV1 had always loved the design of the Bricklin and wanted something different than the normal sports cars of the day. He had owned Corvette’s and Ferrari’s and thought the Bricklin would be like nothing else on the road. Upon hearing of Bricklin’s financial troubles, the original owner made the trip to the factory in Livonia, Michigan and made a deal to purchase three brand-new Bricklins. All three 1975 Bricklin SV1’s were purchased new on November 28th, 1975 though the Bricklin Midwest Inc. dealer in Whippany, New Jersey.
After receiving all three vehicles, he made the decision to use one of the cars as daily summer transportation and store two of them in his garage both with delivery mileage. They sat in his garage for the last 44 years under his meticulous care being routinely started and driven around the block to keep the mechanical components working.
This Bricklin SV1 presented here in the striking original Safety Orange paint has only 75 original miles on the odometer! It truly has been kept just as it left the factory with the original seat covers still in place. The original wheels are still wrapped in the original BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires that it left the factory with. Under the hood and undercarriage still shows all the assembly line markings which is truly remarkable.
Every piece of original documentation was kept by the original owner including copy of original MSO, original bill of sale, dealer brochure, original dealer invoice, owner’s manuals, customs paperwork, original title, period photographs and much more. The amount documentation included in the sale is incredible and documents the story of these time capsule Bricklins.
Bricklins will always be eye-catching, attention-grabbing cars, and they are certainly rare. It is absolutely amazing the extent that was taken by the owner to preserve these vehicles. With only 75 miles on the odometer, this must be the lowest mileage SV1 left in existence.
