Chevrolet Camaro 350 cubic inch V8 1981

Allmän beskrivning : Well done older build. ZZ3 crate engine with aluminum heads. Great bodywork and paint in original colors. Cool interior with Procar bucket seats and custom gauges. Upgraded suspension with coil-over shocks and aluminum wheels. A lot of fun for the money!

Second-generation Camaros are red hot right now. Like their Corvette siblings, these products of the ‘70s are no longer a punchline but desirable cars that frequently turn out to be better than we remember. That’s certainly the case with this tastefully modified 1981 Chevrolet Camaro, which was slated to become a race car but then the builder had a change of heart, deciding it was just too nice to hammer on the track. Instead, it received a very high quality paint job in bright silver metallic with blue Z/28 accents, a look that has aged very well (it was originally white with blue accents). Finish quality was first-rate and has held up over the last 15 or so years since it was finished. Nice, even gaps all around suggest someone took their time and got it right, while a glossy finish with none of the usual waves and ripples means that this was a straight, clean car to begin with. The Z/28 received a deep chin spoiler, a cowl induction hood, the vents on the front fenders, and fairings ahead of the rear wheels, all of which give it an aggressive look that doesn’t seem as over-the-top as we remember. Aside from a few missing pieces of the “AIR INDUCTION” hood decals, it remains in fantastic condition with very few signs of use and certainly no major scrapes or bruises. It’s a great-looking car!

The interior obviously received a comprehensive makeover to include a lot of blue tweed and a pair of supportive Procar bucket seats. The design is clean and uncluttered, focusing on the driver with a full array of Auto Meter gauges in the original dashboard. There’s also a trick Hurst Quarter Stick shifter for the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission underneath, and it is equipped with power windows and a Clarion stereo. The original steering wheel is on a tilt steering column, but in the interest of lighter weight, the heater and defroster have been removed. New carpets, custom door panels, and a restored back seat make this car look finished inside, removing all the rough edges that you might find in a racer. Of course, the T-tops make it a pleasure to drive on sunny days and they seem to seal up well with supple seals and no cracks in the panels themselves. The trunk features a fresh factory-style mat for a finished look.

The engine is a General Motors ZZ3 crate engine with aluminum heads and an upgraded cam that add up to more than 400 horsepower. A big 4-barrel carb handles intake duties, but it also idles nicely so someone took the time to get it tuned correctly Custom aluminum valve covers work with the other aluminum bits on the engine, including the billet accessory drive brackets and pulleys. Beefy tubular braces reinforce the front end—a difference you can really feel—and there’s a giant radiator and a pair of electric fans up front keeping things cool. Tubular headers feed a 3-inch Flowmaster exhaust system that sounds truly spectacular and really lets the high-winding small block breathe properly. The front suspension is a custom tubular setup with coil-over shocks and a fat sway bar, while the rear is the stock 10-bolt hanging on leaf springs. We believe the rear end holds 3.73 gears—this sucker is wickedly quick off the line—with a limited slip that hooks up hard. Factory disc brakes are augmented with cross-drilled rotors up front. There are certainly some signs of use and age, but no concerns about rot or rust issues, all of which were dealt with when it was refinished a few years ago. The stance is exactly right and those big 17-inch chrome wheels fill the fenders with 235/45/17 performance radials.

Extras include the original instrument panel and gauges, some gaskets, and T-top bags.

Watch for second generation Camaros to become more valuable in the coming years. This one delivers a modern performance punch with a vintage look that we find very appealing. It isn’t sophisticated, but the way it works will make you grin like an escaped convict. Call today!

Överraskande, "Amerikas enda sportbil" Corvette infördes i Chevrolet varumärke snarare än sina egna.
