For those who thought 1955 would never come again when it came to sales numbers, 1962-1965 proved them all wrong, especially at Chevrolet. Nineteen sixty-five sales outpaced those from 10 years earlier by more than 670,000 units at Chevy alone. Instrumental in that success was the all-new-for-1965 Chevrolet Impala. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to present this 1965 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible. A lot of money has been invested in this stunning red Impala in the past five years and is included with detailed documentation on all recent work performed.
This particular survivor example was built at GM’s Arlington, Texas assembly plant during the second week of January 1965. It is one of 45,800 Impala convertibles manufactured in 1965 and just one of 27,000 Impala SS droptops made that year.
Originally finished in Evening Orchid Metallic (code P), this droptop now wears a red exterior. The car’s paint and trim are in excellent order. The power-folding vinyl top is black (code 2) and completely new and high quality. The windows are clear and intact while the car’s lights are in excellent condition. This model has new taillights and trim.
The car’s bodywork is straight and solid. There has been a conversion done to power front disc brakes while the car’s rear drum brakes have been completely rebuilt and include new brake lines. Other new parts include front and rear shock absorbers, frame bushings and a fuel tank. The car’s engine bay is extremely tidy, the battery is in very good order and the chrome bumpers are in fantastic shape. This Impala rolls on new chrome, vented wheels with center cap spinners and new Mastercraft Avenger G/T radials.
Under the hood is a recently rebuilt date code correct (#HC) 327 CID V-8 with a .30 overbore, an aluminum intake manifold, an Edelbrock carburetor, new pistons, heavy-duty cylinder rods and cam lifters and the radiator has been re-cored. Backing the engine is a Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission. All recent work and rebuild comes with receipts.
Inside, the car’s black vinyl interior (code 815), is in overall excellent shape. The front buckets and rear bench look amazing while the matching carpeting is in very good order. The original two-spoke steering wheel is in very good order, as is the floor-mounted shift lever, tachometer and horn are inoperable.  The inner door panels and instrument panel are also in very good condition. The center console, with its storage bin, tachometer and clock, is in excellent shape. Finishing the interior is a Clarion AM/FM stereo with cassette deck.
Totally redesigned in 1965, the Impala set an all-time industry annual sales record of more than one million units in the U.S, which has never been bettered. The new full-size Chevys featured dramatically rounded sides, and an all-new front end with new hood contours, curved, frameless side glass (for pillarless models) and sharper angled windshield with newly reshaped vent windows. Sport Coupes wore a sleek semi-fastback roofline and wheel well moldings were revised. Chevrolet promoted the cars’ Wide-Stance design, adhesively bonded windshield and improved full-coil suspension. A two-tone instrument panel put gauges in a recessed area ahead of the driver. The “X” frame was dropped for a new Girder-Guard full-width perimeter frame, which reduced the size of the inside driveline tunnel and redesigned suspension. Two-range Powerglide, as well as Synchro-Mesh three- and four-speed manual transmissions were available. Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission was offered for the first time. As with previous years, Impalas featured more chrome trim inside and out, with pleated tufted upholstery and door panels plus simulated walnut trim on the lower instrument panel.
For its prestige line, Chevrolet added bright wheelhouse moldings, SS fender script, black-filled rear cove band with SS badge on right, with another on the left grille. Specific SS full wheel covers were used. The SS interior featured full carpeting, all-vinyl trim with front bucket seats and bright seatback outline moldings, combination vinyl and carpet door trim with bright accents, foam seat cushions, courtesy lights, more SS badging and a center console with a Rally-type clock and a vacuum gauge.
Competition to this droptop Chevrolet in 1965 included Ford’s Galaxie 500 Convertible, Ford’s Thunderbird Convertible, Plymouth’s Fury III Convertible and Pontiac’s Catalina Convertible.
