Ferrari has always had a reputation of building the ultimate grand-touring cars. As the first two passenger, front engine Ferrari since the much-revered Daytona, the 550 Maranello was an important car. Based on the 2+2 chassis of the outgoing 456, the 550 was positioned as Ferrari’s top of the line model, featuring a comfortable interior, nicely sized trunk, a front mounted 5.5L V12 engine and a rear mounted 6 speed manual transmission. The world’s press gathered at the Nürburgring to see the unveiling of the newest Ferrari grand tourer. Most did not believe that a front-engine V-12 could outperform a mid-engine sports car, but they were wrong. The 550 Maranello had the performance to match any mid-engine design with better comfort and luggage room.
Presented here is an excellent example, with all the eyeball appeal, performance and comfort one desires from such a Ferrari. Finished in what some say is the only colour a Ferrari should be seen Rosso Corsa Red, paired with the flawless Tan leather interior. Slide behind the wheel and twist the ignition key brings forth the unmistakable sound of a DOHC 48v 5.5L Ferrari V12 engine making 485hp at 7,000rpm. Falling perfectly into your hand is the chrome shift knob of the 6 speed transmission in the perfect gated pattern. Of course, it comes outfitted with all the features one would require from a grand touring coupe such as full climate control, traction/stability systems, power features, and a premium audio system. What makes a Ferrari special is the sound, performance and special overall experience that comes from piloting one of these incredible cars.
The 550 Maranello offered here is a well-documented, low-mileage example having covered only 7,660 miles on the odometer and was serviced at every mileage interval by the Ferrari dealership. Den första Ferrari väg bil var de 125 S introducerades 1947 och drivs av en 1,5 L V12 motor, eller hur?Tja det är inte riktigt så enkelt, Ferrari faktiskt producerar e Tipo 815, 1940 Tipo 815 ritades av ex-Alfa Romeo ingenjörer Alberto Massimino och Vittorio Bellentani och Enrico Nardi enligt Enzo sällskap men juridiska frågor med det tidigare intresse Alfa Romeo hindrade Ferrari från att lansera Ferrari marque vid den punkten.
Enzo fick fram en rad fina väg bilar på 50-talet och 60-talet, men de var bara för att finansiera sin passion racing, väder GT / Sportbil eller Grand Prix. 50-talet såg födelsen av Ferraris mest minnesvärda bilar, 250 GTB (tour de France) 250 Testa Rossa, 250 GT SWB bara för att nämna några.
Under ytspänningen växte dock. I November 1961 erfaren försäljningschef Girolamo Gardini gjorde ett ultimatum till Enzo: om spänningar fortsatte skulle han lämna företaget. Som ett resultat var Gardini avsattes, liksom Scuderia Ferrari manager Romolo Tavoni, överingenjör Carlo Chiti, experimentell sportbil utveckling chief Giotto Bizzarrini, och ett antal andra, som stod vid dem.
Utan Chiti och Bizzarrini utvecklingen av vad som skulle bli den mest kvintessensen Ferrari och idag världens dyraste bil, 250 GTO, var vid en svängpunkt. 250 GTO projekt räddades av en ung ingenjör Mauro Forghieri och lång tid racing bodyman Sergio Scaglietti som klev in och tog över programmet med kända resultat.
Förutom 250 GTO, Ferrari launced sådana mästerverk som 250 LM, 250P, 275 GTB, 365 GTB / 4 "Daytona" under 60-talet
I slutet av 60-talet Ferraris prototyper framgång fick ett abrupt stopp av en ny konkurrent, GT40. Ford vände sig till Lola för att producera en Ferrari slog långdistans racer efter Enzo hade klippt affären av med Henry Ford II gör det senare absolut koka av vrede. Samarbetet mellan Ford och Lola skapade den mäktiga Ford GT40 som gav Ferrari några tunga hits i Le Mans 24 framöver.
I slutet av 60-talet FIAT köpte 50% av bolaget, med start en utveckling som har lett till en ny massproducerade era av Ferraris.
