In 1976, Fiat introduced the 131 Abarth Rally, whose road version was produced in 500 units to be approved in the World Rally Championship (which will win three times: 1977, 1978 and 1980). Based on the body of 2 doors first series, appropriately lightened and reinforced, the Abarth Rally was devoid of bumpers and equipped with flared fenders, spoilers, ailerons and took dynamic and an air intake on the bonnet.
The engine was a 4-cylinder DOHC derived from the two-liter Fiat (and developed by Abarth), with distribution to sixteen valves and a displacement of 1995 cc from 140hp in road version, powered by a double-barrel carburetor (235cv in that race has d 'mechanical injection system). The rear suspension, independent wheel, derived from that of the 124 Abarth Rally, he replaced the rigid axle as standard, while the body had elements (hoods, fenders and spoiler) fiberglass or aluminum (doors, roof). On the same basis the Abarth also staged two prototypes: the 031 (with V6 engine of 130) and 035 (with a two-liter four-valve supercharged with a Roots-type supercharger lobe engine which will then be used for the Lancia Rally 037). These cars remained at the prototype stage. The first, with Giorgio Plant driving, won the Giro d'Italian automaker in 1975.
