Ford Mustang 302 cubic inch V8 1965

Allmän beskrivning : Awesome resto-mod with significant upgrades. Strong 302 cubic inch V8, 5-speed manual, upgraded brakes and suspension. Beautiful custom interior that almost looks stock. Fast, fun, and beautiful, this Mustang does everything well!

The awesome thing about vintage Mustangs is that they can be anything you want, from basic commuter to track-based weapon to cool updated resto-mods like this two-tone 1965 Mustang coupe. Perhaps that’s why the Mustang has been a perennial favorite for nearly 60 years. And speaking of two-tone paint, this black-over-silver Mustang looks especially good—who knew that the Mustang shape would lend itself so naturally to the two-tone treatment? This is a lifetime California car, so rust is a non-issue and that shows in the absolutely spotless (and original) undercarriage. Bodywork is excellent and that’s all OEM sheetmetal, no repro stuff here. As a result, it fits together better than many other Mustangs with great body gaps and a deep shine to the finish that only comes from lots of hand sanding and buffing. It may also be worth noting that this is an original T-code car, which means it had a 6-cylinder when it was new. That also means that it was never abused, raced, or wrecked, and that gives you a much better starting point when building something special. The doors on this car close with a reassuring ‘thunk’ rather than the loose ‘whap’ of lesser Mustangs, the hood and trunk line up right, and the overall look is that of a well-constructed car. Yes, starting with good base stock matters, but there’s a lot of money built into this car.

The gorgeous interior draws from the original with two-tone Pony-style upholstery that matches the bodywork perfectly. The low-back buckets seats are nicely bolstered for added support, far more than the original chairs, but it blends so seamlessly that you’ll do a double-take when you first see it. Gray carpets provide a bright interior and the door panels were custom made to match. There’s a fat leather-wrapped steering wheel that looks vaguely reminiscent of the original, and it frames the original gauges including a vintage Rally-Pac on the steering column. There are also a pair of Auto Meter oil pressure and temperature gauges under the dash, just in case. The shifter now manages five forward gears in a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission, and it remains one of the best-shifting transmissions you’ll experience. And since the car is plenty entertaining on its own, they skipped the over-blown stereo and stuck with the factory AM radio in the dash. There’s also a new silver headliner, which is a nice touch, as well as a fully finished trunk with matching carpets.

The original T-code 6-cylinder is long gone, replaced by a great-running 302 cubic inch V8. Better known as the 5.0, this is a late-model roller engine with plenty of dress up, none of which changes the vintage personality of the car. There’s an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor on top, a custom billet aluminum accessory drive system, and some Ford Racing dress-up parts. You’ll also note that power steering is part of the deal, making this Mustang extremely easy to handle in today’s world. Up front there’s a custom aluminum radiator that mimics the original look, as well as a battery topper that resembles a factory Autolite battery case. It starts quickly and a quick blip of the throttle drops it into a muscular idle that sounds spectacular through long-tube headers, an X-pipe, and Flowmaster mufflers. The aforementioned 5-speed transmission has light clutch action and feeds an 8.8-inch rear end from a late-model Mustang. The front suspension has urethane bushings as well as a set of vented and cross-drilled Wilwood disc brakes, while the rear is held up with traditional leaf springs. And we’re glad they left the floors original, because they hide nothing—that’s clean, original sheetmetal throughout and excellent torque boxes. No asterisks on this one! There’s also a new gas tank hanging out back and the stance is exactly right. 17-inch polished Torque Thrust wheels are a great choice and carry staggered 215/45/17 front and 235/45/17 rear performance radials.

This is an easy car to like. It preserves all the flavor of a vintage Mustang without erasing what made these cars great. But it adds notable upgrades like the 5-speed, power steering, and powerful disc brakes to the equation. The result is a vintage Mustang that looks awesome and drives even better. No disappointments here, just a cool pony that’s ready to rock. Call today!
