We have something extremely special here at Motoexotica Classic Cars and very proud to offer this real deal survivor 1940 Ford Deluxe Convertible Club coupe that has been stored away since 1956! This original Ford comes from the same family as our survivor 1968 Shelby GT-500 came from in Greenville Ohio. Many of the pre-war Ford V8 vehicles have been heavily modified in modern times by hot rodders. This is one of the very few that have escaped their grips and has remained in original condition. The last time this Ford was ever offered up for sale was in 1956!
Discovered in Greenville, Ohio barn in 2014 by the original family after it had been parked and forgotten there since 1976. The family originally purchased the car on 6/28/1956 to Harold Brewer of Greenville, Ohio by the Minnich Brothers but Harold passed away in 1975.  Her widow (Betty Brewer) placed the Ford Deluxe, the Shelby GT-500 and a Ford Model T in the back of a newly constructed large shop on the property in 1976 and forgot about the cars after five decades of storing her collectibles in the shop. The Ford Deluxe and the two other cars were re-discovered in 2014 by the family while examining the estate. Betty passed away in 2016 at the age of 90. Car was then sold to Gas Monkey Garage in 2017 and filmed on an episode of Discovery’s Fast N Loud.
Some fascinating historical documents included with this car is a copy of the original sales invoice from 1956 when Harold purchased the car from Minnich Brothers in Greenville Ohio, newspaper clippings found underneath the seat from The Dayton Ohio News April 1946 and the tissue dispenser still has a box of Kleenex dated back from the early 1950’s!
We have noticed that the engine firewall has what appears to be a factory stamp that reads “HOLLOWAY” and “U.A.C 366” and we believe this Ford possibly be an officer’s car right before World War II.
This survivor Ford comes with some really neat period correct accessories such as a South Wind Gasoline Heater and a Firestone Air Chief Tube AM radio that still retains its new tag attached!
This Deluxe is very straight and complete with its original parts and trim. The maroon exterior is in overall good condition for the age, we believe the paint is not factory original but was resprayed with its original color back in the early 1950’s. The original windows are in good order but have some de-lamination due to the age and the lights and lenses are in great original condition. All the trim pieces and sheetmetal around the exterior all appear to be still original, even the rubber covering on the running boards are still original!
The original soft top is in great condition for being 79 years old and still has the original leather Ford edge strips, its in usable condition and the frame goes up and down easily.
Under the hood is Ford’s famous Deluxe 01A 85HP 221 CID Flathead V-8 engine and is original to this car, mated to a sliding gear, three-speed manual transmission, controlled by a lever on the steering column, which was new for 1940. When we acquired this car it had not ran since 1975 but the motor was free. We replaced all the ignition parts and the Ford fired right up! The brakes were completely out so we rebuilt the hydraulic brakes completely. Currently this old survivor Ford actually runs and drives beautifully and is a real time machine and pleasure to drive!
Interior photos show the complete original interior that has soft pliable original seats with period correct aftermarket seat covers. The red bench seats are in fair original shape, as is the car’s carpet and still retains the original Ford plastic mats. The metal instrument panel, two-spoke steering wheel and inner door panels are all in good original condition but the original fuel gauge is inoperable. The mirror glass and shift lever are in good original order.
In January 2014, Gene and Wanda Weyant, of Troy, Indiana, discovered three classic cars within the barn of Gene’s aunt, Betty Brewer, one of which is this Ford. Betty and her husband, Harold, previously ran a used car dealership in Greenville, Indiana.
The Weyants were executors of Betty’s estate; she passed away in 2016 while Harold died in 1975. Harold had invested his money in cars, among other things, Gene said. The Weyants asked a local auctioneer to reach out to find buyers for the cars.
Model year differences from earlier years were few – a high, flat-topped hood dominated the front look of the 1940 model, as the grille spread out to reach the fenders to differentiate the Deluxe line and the headlights were pushed wider still. The standard Ford inherited the grille of the 1939 model with blackout on each side of a heavy chrome center; heavier headlight surrounds serve as another major differentiator from the 1939. Sealed-beam headlights were one of the few major advances for 1940, while a hydraulic top was new on the convertible.
Competition to this Ford in 1940 included Chevrolet’s Special Deluxe and Plymouth’s Deluxe Convertible Coupe.
If you’re looking for a very good example of the Iconic 1940 Ford Convertible that is a true historical survivor, this is an ideal example and will be your only opportunity to own one! Believed to be one of the most original survivor 1940 Ford Deluxe Convertible Club known to exist!
