The Caballero and El Camino already has an interesting place in all of our hearts where one vehicle is both a comfy sedan and a versatile pickup. And a select few add that extra GM flair of a bold hood treatment and styling you thought was only reserved for the Pontiac T/As. That's why this exceptionally well-priced 1980 GMC Caballero Diablo is already so attractive... and it's before you even discover features like the crate V8, backup camera, and A/C interior.
The Caballeros have a particularly sleek and sporty design with a hint of classic style. It only gets amplified by the full Diablo package. Black paint with full-length gold pinstriping always looks bold. And if the devil graphic burning on the hood didn't already give this a devilish look, the Diablo graphics on the lower door and tailgate certainly clues everyone in on this one's wicked ways. GMC also gave these body-color mirrors and window trim, and this has been upgraded further with the painted bumpers for an added dose of the meaner style. The finish is not perfect, but the value price gives you the freedom to enjoy this as an easy driver, and it leaves room in your budget to invest in unleash the devil from the details. There's darkness everywhere you look on this GMC, even with practical pieces, like the trailer hitch and liner paint protecting the bed. So the nice hints of brightwork really stand out in the grille, Rally wheel beauty rings, and swoopy trim around the truck bed.
The comfortable velour interior has dark tones that coordinate nicely with the exterior. The seat has a fold-down armrest when you want individual comfort. Plus, the headliner and carpeting have a fresher look that add to the comfy feeling. The dash will look familiar to anyone who's driven a 4th gen Malibu, so components are easy to source. This one comes with premium features such as cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, and even cold-blowing air conditioning. There have also been some handy upgrades, like an auxiliary gauge trio and a radiator fan switch. There's also a custom center console featuring a touchscreen infotainment system that includes AM/FM stereo, Bluetooth, and a backup camera.
The largest motor available from the factory in 1980 was a 305 cubic-inch V8. That's a fine engine, but we're much happier with the extra power and torque of the upgraded 350ci in this one. Plus, this is a crate motor, which gives a performance feeling right out of the box. It's enhanced further by the Edelbrock upgrade package that includes the air grabber, Performer EPS intake, and four-barrel carburetor. It makes for both a powerful and hardy heart for this Diablo (the consignor even drove it about four hours to our showroom.) So while the devil is in the name, this one is setup to be an easy all-day cruiser with features such as a three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and front disc brakes.
