Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The W126 was the series of S-Class Mercedes manufactured from 1979 to 1992. This made it the longest generation S-Class, with a production span of 12 years. The cars were offered with either straight six, V8, or turbocharged diesel engines.

With this generation of S-Class, Mercedes set out to improve the efficiency and aerodynamics over and above that of its predecessor. They achieved this through the use of lighter materials and wind tunnel testing. The W126 took six years of rigorous testing to develop before being unveiled. Mercedes really took their time to perfect the car, which is evident at first glance.

W126 series models were named in accordance to their engine size, and initially included the 280, 300, 380, and 500. Variants included the SE (standard wheelbase), SEL (long-wheelbase), SEC (coupé), and diesel models (SD and SDL).

The SEC was arguably the best coupe in the world when it arrived on the scene. Launched in 1981 the 500SEC was the initial flagship of the W126 Mercedes S-class range. Strictly speaking the SEC was known as the C126, although in practice most enthusiasts forget such technicalities. Customers for new SECs would have included company directors, football managers, and millionaires after something a little more subtle than a Rolls Royce.

Exterior

This late pre-facelift example looks fantastic in gleaming white, the coachwork accented beautifully with lower panels in matte grey for that period two-tone Mercedes finish. The paint retains a great depth of shine and looks as crisp as ever following a machine polish by our in-house detailer. This low mileage example has been the current owner’s pride and joy since she purchased it from us back in 2013. Understandably it has since picked up one or two small blemishes over the years, the worst being some light marking to edge of the rear bumper and a small bubble on the nearside front arch.

Interior

The Royal Blue upholstery makes for a striking contrast against the brilliant white exterior. Despite now 35 years old the leather remains surprisingly supple, with only a few discreet marks and no major wear to report on close inspection. A flagship model at the time, the 500SEC was well specified with climatic air conditioning, heated and electric front seats with memory, cruise control, an electric sunroof and electric windows, this particular example also boasting the rare factory option ‘307’ – a refrigerated cool box mounted in the boot! The lavish interior is further appointed with padded armrests front and rear, glossy walnut trim, a leather steering wheel, and CD player. The only real negative to be report is the headlining, which has begun to sag.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 500SEC has a wonderfully smooth V8 that gives effortless performance. The engine bay of this example is particularly tidy with no signs of excessive wear to report. The 5-litre powerplant starts without fuss and idles quietly up to temperature. Out on the road, the four-speed automatic gearbox operates just as it should, with smooth changes through every gear. The car was most recently serviced in June 2020 and has been freshly inspected upon arrival with us.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The factory 15-hole alloy wheels appear in nice original condition with only a few expected curb marks to note. Following inspection all the tyres have plenty of tread remaining. ABS and disc brakes ensure the car stops quickly and safely, and new brake pads were fitted all round in June 2020.

History File

This charming 500SEC was first registered in October 1985. It has now driven just 71k miles in the hands of only three registered keepers, the current owner having purchased it from us back in 2013. The car has always been in general use and as such has been maintained accordingly. It was last serviced in June 2020 less than 100 miles ago; work included an oil and filter change, new spark plugs, and new brake pads all round. Since arriving at 4 Star the SEC has been fully inspected and MOT’d, ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.

I automobilhistoriens krönika utvecklas Mercedes-Benzs resa som en berättelse fylld av uppfinningsrikedom från sina grundande pionjärer. År 1886 skapade Karl Benz Benz Patent Motorwagen, en skapelse som skulle gå till historien som världens första bil. Okunnig om detta markerade stunden början på det som skulle utvecklas till den mest ansedda premium-biltillverkaren globalt. Den ekonomiska grundvalen för detta banbrytande företag tillhandahölls intressant nog av Karl Benz fru, Bertha Benz, vilket visade på ett anmärkningsvärt partnerskap som skulle sätta tonen för Mercedes-Benzs arv.

Inte långt därifrån framträdde en parallell berättelse när Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, grundat av Gottlieb Daimler och Wilhelm Maybach, kom in på scenen. År 1901 avslöjade de sin bil under det nu berömda namnet "Mercedes", vilket betyder "guds gåva" på spanska. Detta namn tilldelades bilen på begäran av Emil Jellineks dotter, distributören för Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. Innovationshjulen sattes i rörelse.

Hoppa fram till 1926, ett avgörande år som bevittnade sammanslagningen av Daimler med Benz & Cie., vilket resulterade i födelsen av Daimler-Benz. Den dieselkraftade Mercedes-Benz 260 D från 1936 markerade starten för dieselmotorer i personbilar. Den ikoniska Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing gjorde historia som den första bilen med direkt bränsleinsprutning, även om Gutbrods lilla 2-taktsmotor kan göra anspråk på företräde.

Säkerhetsinnovationer blev en kännetecken, med Béla Barényis patenterade säkerhetscell i "Ponton"-modellerna 1951 med främre och bakre deformationszoner. W116 450SEL 6.9 såg införandet av Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), ytterligare en banbrytande säkerhetsfunktion. Från de första serietillverkade krockkuddarna och därefter fortsatte "första" att etsas in i Daimler-Benzs tyg.

Under sin över hundra år långa resa har Mercedes-Benz inte bara producerat bilar utan har skulpterat ikoner. SSKL, 710 SSK Trossi Roadster, 770K Grosser, 540K Spezial Roadster, 300SL Gullwing, w100 600 Pullman, w111 280SE 3.5 Flachkühler, w113 230SL Pagoda, w109 300 SEL 6.3 och w201 2.3-16 Cosworth vittnar om märkets engagemang för ingenjörsexcellens.

De dånande Silver Arrows, eller "Silberpfeile", inklusive W 25, W 125, W154, W165 och W196, skapade ett arv av dominans på racerbanan. Dessa maskiner var inte bara bilar; de var uttryck för precision, hastighet och en oövervinnelig anda som lämnade sina konkurrenter i dammet.

När Mercedes-Benz går in i framtiden gör det inte bara som en biltillverkare utan som en förvaltare av ett arv, en fackelbärare av innovation och en fyr av bilaexcellens. Vägen framåt kommer säkerligen att bevittna den fortsatta föreningen av toppmodern teknik, tidlös design och ett obevekligt åtagande att sätta nya standarder inom bilvärlden.
