Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition 2000

Allmän beskrivning : A rare Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition, with factory stripes and just 48k miles.

MODEL HISTORY

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is a high performance sports car manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors that is based on the stander Lancer. There have been ten official versions to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a Roman numeral. All use two litre, turbocharged engines and all-wheel drive systems.

The Evolution was originally intended only for Japanese markets, but demand on the "grey import" market led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998. Japanese-spec cars were limited by a gentlemen's agreement to advertise no more than 276hp, a mark already reached by Evolution IV. Therefore, each subsequent version has unofficially evolved above the advertised power figures, with the Japanese-spec Evolution IX reaching an alleged output of around 317hp.

The Evolution VI was produced from January 1999 until March 2001. The improvements over its predecessor mainly focused on cooling and engine durability. It received a larger intercooler, larger oil cooler, and new pistons. The Evolution VI received new bodywork yet again, with the most easily noticeable change being within the front bumper where the huge fog lights were reduced in size and moved to the corners for better airflow.

Great rally success was achieved in the WRC Rallies from 1996-1999 thanks to the legendry Finn Tommi Makinen for clinching the drivers titles in this period and help from team mate Richard Burns for clinching the constructors championship for the first, and thus far only time in 1998.

In 1999 the Tommi Makinen Edition was released. It featured a different front bumper, red and black Recaro seats embossed with the Tommi Makinen logo, 17-inch white Enkei wheels, a red-stitched leather Momo steering wheel and shift knob, a titanium turbine that spooled up more quickly, front upper strut brace, lowered ride height (with tarmac stages in mind), and a quicker steering ratio. Amongst other colours, the Evo VI came in either red (Tommi Makinen Edition only), white, blue, black, or silver with optional special decals, replicating Tommi Mäkinen's rally car's colour scheme. This car is also sometimes referred to as an Evolution 6.5, or TME for short.

Equipment

Air conditioning, Mitsubishi radio/cassette, TME Recaro seats, 17-inch Enkei wheels, Momo steering wheel with red sticthing, Gear knob and gaiter with red stiching, Electric folding mirrors, Electric windows, Adjustable rear spoiler, Tinted windows, Mitsubishi wind deflectors.

EXTERIOR

With its glossy red paintwork, this rare Evo VI is aesthetically very similar to the Championship winning cars made famous by rally legend Tommi Makinen. Not only do these special editions feature different front bumpers to the regular Evo VI's, but also white 17-inch Enkei wheels for that authentic ‘tarmac stage' finish.

This example retains almost all-original paintwork and still presents with its factory stripes down both sides. The gleaming red hue has resisted the urge to fade, and is complete without a single scuff or scrape. Furthermore the body and underside remain entirely corrosion-free, with all trim around the car in excellent order too.

INTERIOR

Inside, this example is near immaculate. The Tommi Makinen Edition Recaro seats present with almost no signs of any use; the cloth bolsters are usually the first areas to wear, however in this car they remain spotless. The red-stitched gear knob presents as new, with the dash and fascia in very good order as well.

The carpets show zero signs of any fading, and rear the seats appear almost unused. Without any of the common 'upgrades' or modifications this example retains a sophisticated and original finish, still featuring the factory Mitsubishi cassette player.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The mighty two-litre DOHC turbocharged engine produces 276hp and rockets the Lancer from 0-60 in well under five seconds. The engine bay presents in excellent condition, and is one of the cleanest of the Evo VI's we have seen.

The five-speed manual gearbox still feels tight, and the all-wheel-drive system provides enough confidence to power though corners at speed. Despite its high-performance credentials, the Evo VI still drives with typical Japanese-car ease; operating smoothly at low speeds before launching into ferocious acceleration at anything above 4000 rpm.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The car sits on the original set of white 17-inch Enkei wheels, as standard on each Tommi Makinen Edition. All four alloys are in impeccable condition having just been professionally refurbished to a very high standard.

The wheels are shod in a matching set of directional tyres. They are complemented by red Brembo calipers all round, which also present as new showing no signs of any discolouration or age-related wear.

HISTORY FILE

First registered in March of 2000 this Tommi Makinen has covered a mere 77,022km to date, which equates to just 47,859 miles. Having previously resided in a dry climate, the car has been recently imported into the UK where all duties and taxes have since been paid. Present in the history file is an original Tommi Makinen Edition sales brochure, complete with all page inserts.
