When you want a speedy pony car, but also looking for true distinction, this 1967 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S is just the ticket. With enhanced V8 power, a great coordinating color combo, and far rarer sheet metal than anything from Ford or Chevy, it's the perfect way to fit into any classic car crowd while still standing above the rest.
1967 was the first year for the second-generation, and the fastback styling was revised to look like it was ready to cheat the wind. Plus, the two-piece front end made it look like it was far wider than the Mustang or Camaro. The details of the design were great, too, like the crisp creases along the tops of the fenders, hood louvers, and the unique wide rear panel. Plus, the sporty Formula S package has its performance image amplified further with upgrade like the staggered 15/17-inch wheel setup and paint that now has been upgraded to a more modern shade of blue.
The upgraded exterior color is quite important because now this coupe coordinates exceptionally well with the factory-correct blue interior. The bucket seats have been recovered in the correct intricate pattern, so you can feel it ripple across your back as you slip behind the wheel. Plus, the carpeting, headliner, and door panels look like they have received a nice investment in freshness. The steering wheel retains its original classic design that literally lets you feel the history. As you look across the dashboard, the sea of blue is artfully broken up by plenty of stainless and chrome that's across the dash and canter console. But if you look closely, there are some nice upgrades. For example, while the original AM radio is in place, the real tunes come from a modern AM/FM/CD stereo in the glovebox. And that connects to upgraded speakers, including a subwoofer hidden behind the rear seat. Plus, the tach in the center of the gauges has been upgraded to a cleanly installed SunPro unit.
The true appeal of the Formula S package was the drive train. The 273 cubic-inch Commando V8 is a fantastic motor. We have the original broadcast sheet that not only shows you this is the correct displacement for the car, but also it's early '67 model year production schedule fits in with the motor's production timeline. So there is a suspicion of originality here. More than just great history, the V8 looks great in the engine bay with the bright red block and brighter polished components stand out from the fresh blue fender walls. The investment in the motor was not just about cosmetics. It's now topped with a Demon four-barrel carburetor let this V8 inhale deeper and delivers bigger performance... and the sound it makes from the dual exhaust is hypnotic. Not only is the Formula S built to be a better driver, but with features like TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission, modern tires, and sway bars front & rear, this is a great all-around cruising classic.
